About the Author
Bruce Macbain holds degrees in Classics and Ancient History and has taught Greek and Roman history at Vanderbilt and Boston Universities. His special interests are ancient medicine and religion in the Roman empire. He brings these together in his fiction–Roman Games (2010) and The Bull Slayer (2013). He lives with his wife in Brookline, Massachusetts.

Taking place in ancient times, the plotlines will be strangely familiar.

This mystery is the second in a series featuring, Plinius Secundus. The first being Roman Games. Plinius has just been sent by Roman Emperor Trajan to serve as Governor in the Roman province of Bithynia-Pontus. This particular province is not a great place and you have to feel for this Governor as he is charged with cleaning up corruption in many high places.
Most of the local population is comprised of Greek citizens, some Persians, and also a cult that has a cave in the woods where they meet to worship a Barbarian God who will remind readers of the mighty Minotaur.
Readers follow a murder mystery involving the theft of money committed by two men in the government. When the new Governor begins his investigation into this crime the story goes from good to grand as everything odd about Ancient Rome is unveiled. The mysterious religious cult who meet in a cave comes along with a cast of characters that will confuse and delight - a young boy with epilepsy which the Romans refer to as the sacred disease, a beautiful Persian who runs the local brothel and a group of Roman wives that resemble the `Real Housewives of New Jersey.' As the criminals come forth and the suspects mount up, readers will find themselves pulled in and rooting for the Governor who may be in way over his head.
Even though this book takes place in ancient times, the reality of it is that the plotlines are very familiar. Researched beautifully, this author knows his subject and adds some scenes that bring out the true History of that time and presents ancient governments that will remind one and all of the mess current governments are in and how they are run. The Governor is a really nice guy who takes good care of his people and tries very hard to govern by doing his job and not offending anyone. He is a hard worker and pays attention to his duties even though sometimes it's very difficult, as people do not respect him or his office. (Sound familiar?)
Although the story is a bit difficult to get into, once you are in - you'll never get out as the Godfather so rightly said. It was a fantastic read, utilizing fact and fiction where the reader will not be pleased with the Romans who took over the world but, if you remember, couldn't keep it.
I am looking forward to the next installment in this series.

No Roman Games

Travel back in time to Ancient Rome with Gaius Plinius Caecilius Secundus aka Pliny the Younger. Pliny has been made governor of Bithynia-Pontus one of the most corrupt provinces in the Empire with explicit instructions from the Emperor Trajan to clean it up. Suetonius, his literary protégé, joins him. Surrounded by animosity, insolence and perfidy Pliny definitely has a hard row to hoe. When the procurator, Balbus, disappears shortly after Pliny’s arrival our mystery is off and running.
THE BULL SLAYER occurs fourteen years after Roman Games. Pliny and Calpurnia have both matured as has their marriage. Pliny encourages Calpurnia in her pursuit of knowledge and painting even though most consider her interests eccentric. Pliny has also developed a deeper understanding of how duplicitous those around him are and can be. This hard-won knowledge is especially useful in Bithynia. He and his household are surrounded by the thinly veiled animosity of those the Romans condescendingly refer to as Greeklings. Diocles, former magistrate of Nicomedia and present city council member, is chief among the wealthy Greeks whose co-operation Pliny needs. Pliny’s mandate from Trajan makes him and those attached to him singularly unpopular. Events deteriorate quickly when Pliny is forced to return home from his tour and accounting of the province after being informed of Balbus’ disappearance.
The pairing of Pliny and Suetonious was one I was really looking forward to, having read The Twelve Caesars, and as long as the focus stayed on the mystery it was all I had hoped. THE BULL SLAYER is a more personal read than Roman Games. There’s a lot more focus on Pliny and Calpurnia’s marriage and relationships with those around them in and out of their household. Sadly, the personal overtakes the mystery. Where those personal lives led and the secrets revealed were disenchanting, to say the least. THE BULL SLAYER shares that cluttered and wearing feel I experience when reading the Marcus Didius Falco series (Davis); too much detailed attention on the personal lives for my taste. Nor was the ending definitive as in Roman Games. However; it does give the reader numerous ideas about where the next book could possibly go regarding certain events.
Thoroughly enjoying Roman Games as I did I confess to being disappointed in THE BULL SLAYER. At this point I’m not sure I’ll read the third book.

Great Reading

The Bull Slayer proved to be a riveting tale full of suspense and twists and turns around every corner. Pliny's story, while a bit slow to start, proved to be intriguing with his complex story line. This book has a bit of everything love, tragedy, betrayal, and mystery.
The complexity of this story is something that only history mixed with fiction can provide. It is evident the author is passionate about this time period as well as the story and characters. One thing that I was thankful for was that while in many ways the author stayed true to the time period, they made the language easy to follow. Mr. MacBain even provides definitions for some of the terminology to assist the reader, though it was not necessary because I could follow along easily throughout the story.
One character that truly intrigued me was Pliny's wife, Calpurnia. In some ways I felt bad for her since her husband frequently left her alone due to his need to travel for business. On the other hand I cannot help but feel that, while she may be educated, she is very naive in many other aspects of life, including love. She easily loses herself when it comes to the opposite sex; I am not sure if this is because of her inexperience or the time period, but it created an interesting story.
I have always enjoyed high suspense historical stories and The Bull Slayer delivered everything I expected plus some.
