Battleship obselete by WW2? Not so fast....
By Daniel Durr, Jr
This book is an outstandingly researched treatise on the British battleships and battlecruisers of WW2. The author manages to include quite a bit of history of the German, Japanese, Italian, French, and American battle-fleets as well.

He doesnt just set out to tell the history of the capital ships of the RN though. He lays out the proposition that the battleship wasn't quite obsolete at the outset of World War II, despite the common assertions to the contrary. He makes a compelling case. Instrument technology limited the usefulness of aircraft at night and in bad weather through much of the war, and of the 3 techniques for attacking ships from the air, only one was usually effective against battleships.

Level bombers could not hit ships at sea, although many battleships were destroyed by level bombing raids through the course of the war when in port (Arizona, Tirpitz, etc). Dive bombers did lots of damage, but rarely sunk battleships on their own (the case of the Marat notwithstanding). Torpedo bombers could and did sink battleships, but only the Japanese had a really good torpedo at the start of the war. They also had the only modern and effective torpedo bomber. Combine this with the vulnerability of a carrier battle group when the aircraft were off on a raid, or worse, while they were re-arming/refueling, and you can make the case that the battleship/battlecruiser still had quite a bit of usefulness left.

Most acknowledge that the big ships were very useful for shore bombardment, and many realize that they were exceedingly effective in the anti-aircraft role (at least the later BB's that were bristling with AA guns and had modern fire control and direction setups). Most people do not realize however that several aircraft carriers were sunk by surface gunfire during the war, and in several other cases, only narrowly escaped same.

An excellent read well deserving of 5 stars.

Billy Mitchell was Wrong: a BB Narrative with Insightful Thesis
By Brandon Musler
Yes, WW2 hastened the decline of the dreadnought but Smith's history of battleships, centered primarily on the Royal Navy, offers a broad perspective on the important role they played before actually being obsolete. This is NOT the product of a blinkered enthusiast; it is a well reasoned and comprehensive account of the substantive impact BBs had on all manner of naval operations. At its core is a thesis that I had never seen laid out so clearly before. Because of their thick horizontal (deck) armor, BB's could and did survive the depredations of dive bombers to provide support where cruisers and DDs alone perished. Even though they were vulnerable to torpedo bombers as Pearl Harbor, Taranto, the Bismarck and Force Z prove...no battleship was lost solely to dive bombers (payload generally being too limited) and thus they continued to usefully run the gauntlet in the Med and elsewhere throughout the war. Peter C. Smith has written EXTENSIVELY on dive bombers and close support, so he makes this point with genuine authority and, at any rate, the history speaks for itself. I also think THE GREAT SHIPS is a bargain, providing real value just for its nuanced discussion of WW2's critical nautical campaigns. If you are interested in naval history, particularly the RN, this one deserves space on your bookshelf as a worthwhile survey that serves to redress the premature "white elephant" school of thought.

FInally, the respect they deserve!
By Phil Geusz
The author and I share a pet peeve about how the history of WWII is written. "Battleships were obsolete by then," the vast majority of shallow, poorly-thought-out books claim. "Air power, especially carrier air power, had moved to the forefront." And then the same author refers to battle after battle to prove their point...

...not only ignoring the many decisive roles the battlewagons continued to play right up to 1945 and beyond in carrier battles, but often blithely citing campaigns largely won by battleships and other surface warships like the interminably bitter struggle against the Tokyo Express.

In short, the WWII battlewagon sailors don't get no respect, and this book is an excellent beginning towards setting that right once and for all.
