what a great tip

I think most of us parents have to deal with the dillema how to get our kids to clean up after themselves, and this book enlights a nothion that is very true, not only for this dillema, but for other dillemas in life too.

Message can go awry

This book is supposed to help a child learn internal motivations for cleaning up one's room. In my house now, the answer to all clean up requests is, "NO. I am a Messy Mason."

Teaches Children That They Can Get Away with Backtalk & Teaches Parents That it's OK to Delay Consequences or Expect Respect.

My 3 year old daughter and I quit reading this when we realized that that Mason's mom was allowing him to backtalk and put off cleaning his room. Instead of immediate consequences for his defiance, his mother allowed him to get away with it and she spent her time and energy trying to think of other "creative" ways to get him to clean his room. In our society of "entitlement", it may be an option to clean your room, but in my home, cleaning and taking care of our things is NOT an option. It's a responsibility. Backtalk isn't an option, either. There are loving ways to talk about the benefits of cleaning your room, and my children and I do have those kinds of discussions, but they are still required to do what they are told. When I realized the mindset of this story, my daughter and I went back and had a great discussion about why this book is NOT good. We role-played scenarios that were respectful and disrespectful. We talked about things that are non-negotiable and those that are. We talked about how, when Ana grows up, she can TELL her child in a loving but firm way to do things. The only benefit of this book was the discussion about how off-track the author was.
