Dark Days: The Long Road Home, follows the first week after an EMP as society begins to crumbleand the reality of the 'dark days' ahead begins to set in.
An EMP can be caused by a nuclear device being detonated high in theatmosphere, disabling all electronics in its line of sight, or by a solar stormlike the one that occurred in 1859 when technology was still in its infancy, an event that scientists believe would cripple todays society. A more recent occurrence of a solar EMP isthe one that shut down the Hydro-Quebec power grid that services Canada's Quebec province in 1989.

Romantic adventure in survival mode

Although romantic suspense is not my normal genre I really enjoyed this book. While I am an avid reader of the thriller genre, I try to have a reasonably eclectic taste in books and read some good ones and some pretty awful ones. "Dark Days" is definitely one of the better ones. It is a story of survival amidst desperation, and of love and compassion in the ruins of society as we know it.
Christopher broke Gemma's heart when she was in her teens. Gemma has built a new life for herself and is devastated when her best friend Caroline dies, leaving Gemma to look after her 4 year old son, plus a promise that obliged Gemma to contact Christopher again. Gemma travels to the city and has just told Christopher Caroline's secret when the world as they knew it disappears in an instant - all power fails, cars stop, planes crash and more.
How many of you know the potential apocalyptic damage that can be caused by an EMP (an electromagnetic pulse -a short, rapid burst of energy that can be caused by the sun or nuclear devices) that can disable every power system and electronic device in a fraction of a second? Without these everyday things we rely on the world quickly moves into survival mode.
Gemma and Christopher set out on a journey of survival, bound together by the need to get to Gemma's self-sufficient hobby farm 300 miles away. They are also bound together as they rediscover a mutual bond that has never completely been lost. Along the way they meet the good and the bad, and test themselves to their physical and emotional limits.
This is not your normal dose of tacky and steamy mass produced romantic suspense nonsense. It is a sensitive adventure story of people faced with a challenge to survive. There is always hope at the end of the road. While I was reading the book I felt that a scenario of a major EMT apocalypse and its aftermath plus a strong romantic theme had the makings a great movie.
This is a first novel by L M May so it may not be as polished or balanced as books by more experienced authors. I probably would have liked a bit more focus on the budding rekindling of lost romance. But the important thing to me was that, despite some minor flaws, I really enjoyed the book. I will remember the characters of Gemma and Christopher and their struggle for survival far longer than most of the characters and plots of other books I read.
I look forward to reading more books by LM May. The ending of the book clearly opens the path for future books about the aftermath of the apocalypse and how the characters in this book survived.

Immature

Story set in the U.S., author obviously British. Not a bad thing, just a bit comical at times. Not many editing errors for a self published book. Interesting premise.
The story line had promise. However, I found myself actually despising the main female character. The author thinks that a stubborn woman, who becomes whiny when she does not get her way, is constantly taking cheap shots, puts herself and her partner in unnecessary dangerous situations, is a "strong woman". Strong women are not immature drama queens like Gemma. And as far as the lead male character goes, Christopher's desperate need to bed this woman even at the point when she is shot and passed out, is frankly childish and not sexy at all. I found myself really disliking both characters, and not rooting for them at all. If you like teen drama, then this may just be the book for you. Being an adult, I would like to have seen a lot more maturity to the love story.
Being a huge fan of this genre, I found the story lacking a certain sense of "reality". I know the story is fiction, but a well rounded story requires a certain sense of believable scenarios. This book did not have that and the plot never truly developed. While I understand that there is a sequel in progress, a good story should have a "stand-alone" sense with an exciting-I-can't-wait-to-see-what-happens-next cliff-hanger. This book left me with a sense of I-couldn't-care-less-what-happens-to-these-two-childish-morons.
The author could have skipped over a lot of unneeded minutiae and used those pages to resolve some interesting side story issues, such as what happened to Megan and Becky, and what the hell was in that suitcase that Melinda couldn't let go of. I think that explaining those issues in a sequel could end up being anti climactic and honestly too late.
It is good story premise, but unfortunately not developed and rather immature.

Good story line but wrong for a romance book

The story line was excellent and would have made a great book if developed properly. It was fairly realistic at first but then turned into a poorly hidden, common, romance novel with an unrealistic ending. In fairness I don't care for mushy romance novels where the main characters spend all their time wondering how the other person"feels". So I guess I was just disappointed to be expecting an apocalypse story and got a overly romantic fairy tale.
