Families can be together forever*

*unless you don't believe in the religion like the rest of your family. Then you're ostracized.

A year ago I would have given this book five stars. I grew up in an LDS family in an LDS neighborhood in an LDS town in an LDS county in an LDS state. Everyone I knew was LDS. It was not safe to be anything else. When I moved away for college I suddenly had the opportunity to think for myself. I discovered that "heathens" are actually very good people and many were better than the mormons that I had known.

I also began to question the iffy history of the mormon church. I researched only on the church website because I was terrified of "anti-mormon" literature. The number of things that didn't sit well with me pile up until I decided that I just wasn't sure if I could believe anymore. I prayed and prayed. I read The Book of Mormon daily looking for the spirit that was promised if asking with real intent and a sincere heart. I had never felt it the three times before that I had read the book before, but this time I desired more than ever for it to be true. The implications of it being false were horrifying.

I came to the conclusion that the Book of Mormon was not true. Joseph Smith was a terrible, lying, selfish conman. (Seriously. Just do a little research.) When my family found out it was total chaos. I have never felt so attacked and degraded. The mormon church claims to be all about family. And it is. Until one of the family members isn't a part of the church or is gay or some other horrible abomination. Then the church utterly tears them apart. I used to have a great relationship with my family and now they won't talk to me unless it's to tell me what an awful person I am. I have been completely cutoff and am currently classified by the government as homeless (even though I have a friend that's letting me stay with them right now.)

I have never seen another book cause so much conflict between family members.

If you think you know what the word "awesome" means, you are wrong. Unless, of course, you have read this book and learned the true meaning of "awesome" (hint: it starts with "Pastor" and ends with a three letter word that is the opposite sex as "woman"). If you haven't read this book yet, it is only because Pastorman has decided not to force you to read it with his thoughts. You should hope he decides to make you read it, as all who fail to partake of his wisdom, recorded in this book, are doomed for explosion or round house kicks into outer space.

Favorite truth about Pastorman: "Pastorman does not boast, he is just trying to be humble and speak the truth when he tells others that he is right about absolutely everything."

I loved Wren and Storm. I found myself laughing and crying both throughout this book. I fell in love with Storm MacKeefe and can't wait to read the MadMan MacKeefe Series.

An EMP can be caused by a nuclear device being detonated high in theatmosphere, disabling all electronics in its line of sight, or by a solar stormlike the one that occurred in 1859 when technology was still in its infancy, an event that scientists believe would cripple todays society. A more recent occurrence of a solar EMP isthe one that shut down the Hydro-Quebec power grid that services Canada's Quebec province in 1989.

Romantic adventure in survival mode

Although romantic suspense is not my normal genre I really enjoyed this book. While I am an avid reader of the thriller genre, I try to have a reasonably eclectic taste in books and read some good ones and some pretty awful ones. "Dark Days" is definitely one of the better ones. It is a story of survival amidst desperation, and of love and compassion in the ruins of society as we know it.

Christopher broke Gemma's heart when she was in her teens. Gemma has built a new life for herself and is devastated when her best friend Caroline dies, leaving Gemma to look after her 4 year old son, plus a promise that obliged Gemma to contact Christopher again. Gemma travels to the city and has just told Christopher Caroline's secret when the world as they knew it disappears in an instant - all power fails, cars stop, planes crash and more.

How many of you know the potential apocalyptic damage that can be caused by an EMP (an electromagnetic pulse -a short, rapid burst of energy that can be caused by the sun or nuclear devices) that can disable every power system and electronic device in a fraction of a second? Without these everyday things we rely on the world quickly moves into survival mode.

Gemma and Christopher set out on a journey of survival, bound together by the need to get to Gemma's self-sufficient hobby farm 300 miles away. They are also bound together as they rediscover a mutual bond that has never completely been lost. Along the way they meet the good and the bad, and test themselves to their physical and emotional limits.

This is not your normal dose of tacky and steamy mass produced romantic suspense nonsense. It is a sensitive adventure story of people faced with a challenge to survive. There is always hope at the end of the road. While I was reading the book I felt that a scenario of a major EMT apocalypse and its aftermath plus a strong romantic theme had the makings a great movie.

This is a first novel by L M May so it may not be as polished or balanced as books by more experienced authors. I probably would have liked a bit more focus on the budding rekindling of lost romance. But the important thing to me was that, despite some minor flaws, I really enjoyed the book. I will remember the characters of Gemma and Christopher and their struggle for survival far longer than most of the characters and plots of other books I read.

I look forward to reading more books by LM May. The ending of the book clearly opens the path for future books about the aftermath of the apocalypse and how the characters in this book survived.

Story set in the U.S., author obviously British. Not a bad thing, just a bit comical at times. Not many editing errors for a self published book. Interesting premise.

The story line had promise. However, I found myself actually despising the main female character. The author thinks that a stubborn woman, who becomes whiny when she does not get her way, is constantly taking cheap shots, puts herself and her partner in unnecessary dangerous situations, is a "strong woman". Strong women are not immature drama queens like Gemma. And as far as the lead male character goes, Christopher's desperate need to bed this woman even at the point when she is shot and passed out, is frankly childish and not sexy at all. I found myself really disliking both characters, and not rooting for them at all. If you like teen drama, then this may just be the book for you. Being an adult, I would like to have seen a lot more maturity to the love story.

Being a huge fan of this genre, I found the story lacking a certain sense of "reality". I know the story is fiction, but a well rounded story requires a certain sense of believable scenarios. This book did not have that and the plot never truly developed. While I understand that there is a sequel in progress, a good story should have a "stand-alone" sense with an exciting-I-can't-wait-to-see-what-happens-next cliff-hanger. This book left me with a sense of I-couldn't-care-less-what-happens-to-these-two-childish-morons.

The author could have skipped over a lot of unneeded minutiae and used those pages to resolve some interesting side story issues, such as what happened to Megan and Becky, and what the hell was in that suitcase that Melinda couldn't let go of. I think that explaining those issues in a sequel could end up being anti climactic and honestly too late.

It is good story premise, but unfortunately not developed and rather immature.

Good story line but wrong for a romance book

The story line was excellent and would have made a great book if developed properly. It was fairly realistic at first but then turned into a poorly hidden, common, romance novel with an unrealistic ending. In fairness I don't care for mushy romance novels where the main characters spend all their time wondering how the other person"feels". So I guess I was just disappointed to be expecting an apocalypse story and got a overly romantic fairy tale.

Are you sitting comfortably? Then let Will begin...

When I discovered we were to be treated to Will's side of 'Slammed', I was delighted yet at the back of my mind there was a tiny pocket of hesitancy at the thought of a repeated story. Yes it is a retelling of 'Slammed' and I purposefully chose not re-read it beforehand as I wanted that feeling of remembering the little things you tend to forget. Whilst we know how Will and Lake's journey ended, I devoured this as if I was clueless to the story. It is quite simply its own book and Colleen Hoover has done an outstanding job in keeping the story fresh and full of every possible emotion.

I love getting into the head of a male character and discovering their thoughts, feelings, hopes and fears as well a greater insight into them as a character. As much as I thought I knew Will, there is so much we were never privy to; his confiding moments with Julia, his friendship with Gavin and just how deep his inner turmoil ran. 'This Girl' reinforces what an exceptional man he is and I fell in love with him all over again.

Will and Lake's situation over all 3 books has been heartwarming, heartbreaking, filled with happiness, sadness, frustration and humour. I felt their joy and their pain and I laughed and I fought the tears. Their brothers deserve a special mention as those little boys brought many of the uplifting moments, from laughing at their innocent comments through to the touching nature of their unconditional love for each other, Will and Lake and not forgetting their resilience against the loss of their parents.

Whilst I am sad to have finished this wonderful series, the final chapters and the epilogue did it a serious justice and finished the story beautifully. I have no doubt that Colleen Hoover will treat us to more gems in the future and irrespective of your age (I'm mid 30's) 'Slammed', 'Point of Retreat' and 'This Girl' are unmissable reads.

Two words to sum up...Butterflying Superb.

Girl, you're a wonder to me. Song lyrics

"This Girl," is the latest installment of the bestselling Shammed series YA set of stories. They offer the readers a story of love and heartache combined with some excellent poetry.

Will Cooper is a high school student teacher caring for his younger brother since their parents untimely deaths. With the added responsibility of caring for his younger brother, Will has doubled up on his courses to get his teaching certificate sooner. He's also fighting off depression due to his parents deaths and that his girlfriend moved out because she didn't want partial care of Will's brother.

The novel is played out at a liesurly pace as a new neighbor moves across the street. This family is a mother, a son the age of Will's brother and a young woman who Will is immediately attracted to.

Will asks the young lady out on a date and brings her to a poetry slam where he recites one of his poems.

Everything is going well until he sees the girl at his school and signing up for his class. He knows of the inappropriateness of a teacher and student relationship so he must choose a course of action.

This is a very enjoyable novel, told from Will's point of view. The characters are well presented and the plotting well done.

Perfect ending to a perfect series!

I ADORED This Girl! It was so much more than I had anticipated it being!

After reading Slammed and Point of Retreat I was happy with the HEA Will and Lake were given, finding out about This Girl was just icing on the cake to this amazing series. After reading This Girl, I realized that it was a perfect HEA and ending to a perfect series. Colleen Hoover has written another exceptional book that flowed flawlessly between the past and the present and back. Even though the past was somewhat retelling Slammed and how they fell in love it felt like an entirely new story through Will's eyes. There were so many things and feelings Will went through that we weren't privy to in Slammed and there were several things that shocked me! Then when in the present, Will and Lake were adorable. I love them as a couple and knowing they have a HEA after everything they have been through makes me so happy!

Colleen Hoover knows how to write a good, no, a phenomenal book. I loved everything about This Girl and the emotions I went through. Now, I'm just sad it's over. I'm going to miss Will, Lake and the gang and the amazing slams.
