One of the best mysteries ever written!

Many years ago author John Dickson Carr claimed that "The Mystery of the Yellow Room" was "the best detective tale ever written". While I would probably choose one of the novels of John Dickson Carr as my all-time favorite, I can wholeheartedly endorse this book by Gaston Leroux. It is clearly one of the best. The famous attack which takes place in a locked room is in itself worth the price of the book. That is not all that the book has to offer, though. There is also the amazing disappearance of the villain with pursuers literally two steps behind him. I challenge anyone to guess the solution. Read this book yourself and I am sure you will agree: Gaston Leroux created a masterpiece with "The Mystery of the Yellow Room".

Interesting period piece ruined by terrible Kindle version.

I knew from other reviews that the style was melodramatic and the characters wooden, but I like locked-room mysteries so I was willing to put up with that. I even managed with gritted teeth to get past the truly dreadful translation (not inaccurate, just very clunky and literal). What made me return the book without finishing it were the completely useless diagrams in the Kindle version. To be clear: the diagrams are simply unreadable, appearing as a mishmash of random bits of text interspersed with |||| ___ characters in an apparent attempt to draw a picture in text. It doesn't work. I even tried different fonts, sizes, line spacing etc. to no avail. I tried on my Kindle device, on the cloud reader, and on my Android tablet and they were all equally bad. As the diagrams are apparently important for the story (can't be sure as I didn't finish it), I just felt I'd been scammed and asked for my money back. I look forward to reading this story in some other format, or in an improved Kindle version if such a thing appears.

A great classic mystery crime fiction novel

The Mystery of the Yellow Room is a great classic mystery crime fiction novel. Agatha Christie admired this novel and it has inspired the whole crime fiction literature history. It is a must read and an intellectual challenge to the reader. And this Kindle edition has an index to all chapters and is well formatted so I give it 5 stars. Mystery of the Yellow Room (The first detective Joseph Rouletabille novel and one of the first locked room mystery crime fiction novels)
