Just what I needed to help me assess my priorities.
By Anjanette Barr
We've been in our new home for about a month now, and we've visited three churches. I started reading "Connecting Church & Home" at just the right moment. This book isn't about finding a church family, but it has helped me prioritize the characteristics that we should look for in addition to sound doctrine. Specifically, Dr. Kimmel advises that we pay closer attention to the church's philosophy than its strategy or tactics.

That may sound obvious and simplistic, but the way he unravels the implications of that truth has been a huge blessing for me.

Dr. Kimmel spends time helping the reader see that even a church with wonderful, orthodox theology, a passionate staff, generous volunteers, and stellar programming will fall short of effectively sharing the gospel and transforming lives if their underlying philosophy is not one of grace: treating others the way God treats (and loves) us.

From his point of view, that culture of grace begins at home, so a (the?) main focus of a local church should be to train and equip parents (and members in general) to respond to their children each other with grace. Theology and evangelism aren't downplayed in this paradigm. On the contrary, he believes that our theology has to be solid in order to really live in grace. I definitely agree.

What does living in grace look like? The last few chapters of this book are full of practical application. I was getting nervous about the number of questions popping into my head as I read the first 3/4 of the book, and I was so pleased that he'd answered them all by the end.

Dr. Kimmel isn't advertising for a specific church model - this can be applied to the way your church lives as a family whether you have age-segregated ministries or a family-integrated church. And most importantly for me, it can be applied even by parents who aren't finding the support they need in their church.

A must read for parents and church members alike.
By J. Stenglein
If you have ever read a book by Tim Kimmel or heard him speak, then you already know that his views on parenting and family can be strikingly different than what you might encounter from other Christian experts. It seems obvious that the heart of the Christian parenting message should be grace, but unfortunately it often is not. I am always intrigued by the perspective Kimmel brings to real life issues, so when I was offered a copy of his newest book, Connecting Church and Home, I agreed to review it. I was curious to see exactly how this author of Grace Based Parenting would address the issue of grace in family ministries.

According to Kimmel, young people are leaving their churches in record numbers. This is despite youth ministry programs of ever-increasing size and flash. Surely, something is missing. Kimmel suggests that grace is the missing element. In addition, he argues that churches and parents should foster a grace-based partnership. Working together, churches and parents can truly reach children for God. "The role of a parent is to connect to the heart of his or her child in such a way he or she prepares that child to more easily connect to the heart of God." (p. 21)

However, Kimmel states, too many parents have subcontracted out their children's spiritual training to churches and parochial schools. The result is disconnected parents, overwhelmed churches, and children who are growing up without a strong example of God's grace in their homes. In Connecting Church and Home, Kimmel lays out a clear plan for grace-based partnership between churches and parents.

This book is not just a list of platitudes and wishes. Instead, Kimmel lists specific things church families can do to connect church and home. This connection is vital if we want our children to see faith and grace lived out and not just preached.
I highly recommend this book to parents, ministers, and church members who care about the children in their churches. It is very practical and very important.

Just what I was missing.
By Handee Andee
CONNECTING CHURCH & HOME by Dr. Tim Kimmel is just what I have been missing. The book outlines a, "grace-based partnership" between the church and home to win and keep the next generation of believers for Christ. The information as a whole in this book isn't exactly ground-breaking if you have been saturated in the "family ministry" or "faith at home" circle of thinking that I find myself in, but my question quickly became, "Alright - so what about this grace? Is this what I am missing?" And I just had to keep turning the pages.

From chapter to chapter on heart connections, ministry philosophy, the problems people have with grace, an introduction to a basic grace-based ministry plan, it all finally lined out with this: Grace is simply, "treating others the way God treats us." When we approach the ministry we have to our children (or the ministry we have to the families in our churches) we must relate to one another in the same way God relates to us. Kimmel show us that God the Father, 1. Meets our innermost needs, 2. Allows us the freedom to be ourselves, 3. Gives us the tools we need to build our character which, 4. Leads us into a life of true greatness. And we are called to extend these same principles to each of our relationships

There were multiple well-communicated points about what this looks like in our relationships and several that hit me straight to the heart. For a more complete retelling of my personal experience with this book, read my full blog post about it here: [...]

BOTTOM LINE: I highly recommend this book to parents and church leaders alike. It is a short, easy read that gets to the heart of a lot of the issues churches and homes are facing today and then lines out a sample plan of action immersed in the grace of God that is clear and concise that any family or church could easily adapt to their specific God-given circumstances.
