Shifting Dreams (Cambio Springs Mysteries Book 1), by Elizabeth Hunter

If Jena knew anything from growing up in a town full of shapeshifters, it was this: Everything changed.

Somedays Jena Crowe just can’t get a break. Work at her diner never ends, her two boys are bundles of energy, and she’s pretty sure her oldest is about to shift into something furry or feathery. Added to that, changes seem to be coming to the tiny town of Cambio Springs, big changes that not everyone in the isolated town of shapeshifters is thrilled about.

Caleb Gilbert was looking for change, and the quiet desert town seemed just the ticket for a more peaceful life. He never counted on violence finding him, nor could he have predicted just how crazy his new life would become.

When murder rocks their small community, Caleb and Jena will have to work together. And when the new Chief of Police isn’t put off by any of her usual defenses, Jena may be faced with the most frightening change of all: lowering the defenses around her carefully guarded heart.

SHIFTING DREAMS is the first paranormal romance in the Cambio Springs Mysteries series by Elizabeth Hunter, author of the Elemental Mysteries.

A Definite Must Read...
By Mandy @ I Read Indie
When I first read the novella, LONG RIDE HOME, I was so impressed. I know Hunter is an amazing writer after reading her other works: The Elemental Mysteries series & THE GENIUS AND THE MUSE just to name a couple. But what impressed me most was her ability to create a short story so heart wrenching and so captivating. Not many short stories can do that to me. But Hunter nailed it. Why am I talking about LONG RIDE HOME you might ask? Well it is the novella that leads us into SHIFTING DREAMS. A little prelude of what was to come.

Now let’s talk about SHIFTING DREAMS, shall we?
Oh boy, Caleb had no idea what he was getting himself into when he heads out to the desert to take a job as police chief to a small California town. His first night there he meets a gorgeous bartender and thinks that it might not be so bad after all. But soon he starts noticing strange looks among the town’s people and certain things don’t add up. Even more so when there is a murder in the nearly crime free town. Caleb is bound and determined to get to the bottom of it no matter the cost.

Jena wants to forget the night she met the new police chief. Not that anything other than kissing went down, but it would be best for her and her family if this outsider would just leave well enough alone. He doesn’t need to get mixed up in her life and her secrets. Secrets that could cost her her life and that of those she loves. Secrets that the town has kept hidden for years and years.

If you have ever read any of Hunter’s other work you know this lady can write a mean Vampire series. She has even dabbled in Contemporary Fiction (which I happened to love by the way). And now, Hunter can add ‘Shifters’ to her resume. Her writing is impeccable and it just pulls you in. You come out of your book stupor a little depressed that the real world isn't really filled with vamps or shapeshifers. Where’s my Gio…my Carwyn…my Caleb? That’s right ladies they just don’t exist…except in Hunter’s wonderful world of literature.

I am so glad that Hunter did take a new route with Shifters…it just proves she has got what it takes to show readers she isn’t one of those authors who only want to write one certain genre. Her books are different and entertaining and also get a little hot. Well ok, a lot of hot. And SHIFTING DREAMS is no different. It has everything I want in a book and to me I thought it was absolute perfection. I got a great mystery that wasn’t easy to solve, a romance that took its time building up, and an array of characters that could easily keep this series going for a while. Oh yes, lots of hidden stories just waiting to be told.

This is one book you will not want to wait long to read. I read it, I inhaled it, and I fell hopelessly in love with it. I know you will too.

Not Ms. Hunter's Best Effort
By Tabby1249
Having read most of Elizabeth Hunter's Elemental Mysteries I had high hopes for Shifting Dreams. Unfortunately most of my dreams went largely unrealized mostly because of what I believe to be some incongruence in characterization, gaps in logic and way too many characters. Let's start with Jena, shall we?

Jena is a young, serious and dedicated single mother living in a very small, close-knit shifter community out in the middle of the California desert. By day she owns and runs the town's only diner and helps out in the local biker bar at night. Her concern and care for her two sons is made clear very early on which made her spontaneous make-out session with Caleb, the stranger in town feel awkward and out of character. I understand sexual frustration and need, but this early scene just felt odd to me and in a small town like Cambio Springs, her actions would have been noted and remarked.

As for Caleb...hmmm... Described as a decorated lawman from Albuquerque, he's hired to be the new police chief of Cambio Springs. Even though an effort was made to explain his hiring so far in advance of the opening of the planned new resort, it just didn't feel logical to me. The town has the protection of the county sheriff, is poor and on the the brink of collapse, but a new police chief and deputy are hired well before they're needed for a town which is described as having VERY little crime. Apart from investigating the mystery in this book he mostly just sits around and daydreams about Jena.

My other complaint about Caleb, who is described multiple times as a hotshot lawman, is that he's kind of piss poor at doing basic lawman stuff. At two crucial times, when he should have had his weapon, he comes up without it. Also, even though his initial investigative logic is interesting to read its after he undergoes a substantial personal change that he seems to take almost a backseat in the investigation leaving it to Jena and her cohorts. He starts off strong, but seems to devolve throughout the story making me not sure I'd not sure want him on my side. He just doesn't feel like a strong character.

Bottom line: Shifting Dreams felt uneven, lacked logic in some places, was excessively populated with a myriad of characters if every fur, fang and claw, and generally lacked the magic found in Ms. Hunter's other novels. While better than some paranormal mystery romances I've read, this one is well below her usual standard.

4.5 stars - I love the town of Cambio Springs, and am longing for more
By melindeeloo
I've enjoyed Hunter's Elemental World books but the residents of Cambio Springs are actually more up my supernatural alley.

Outsiders pretty much have to marry in to learn the secret that the residents of Cambio Springs are keeping, but the town is dying, there are no jobs and families are being forced to move away from the only place that they will ever truly be able to be themselves. That freedom from hiding is what brought young widow Jena and her two sons back home to Cambio Springs and her extended family.

As a single mom, Jena is too busy for a relationship, but when she decides to enjoy a flirtation with a handsome stranger from out of town, she expects some smooches but no entanglements after they say goodnight. Caleb Gilbert, is 'not just passing through' though, and has been hired as Cambio Springs' new police chief in conjunction with a scheme to bring new life to the town and entanglements are just want he comes to want with the smart and capable Jena. But when there's a murder in the close knit community, Caleb quickly realizes that he is trying to solve a puzzle where all the pieces don't fit and everyone in Cambio Springs is lying to him.

I really enjoyed my first full length visit to Cambio Springs, an out of the way desert town with a secret. I really loved the swaggering and sharply intelligent Caleb and the fact that even though Jena really makes him work it, he is relentless in his pursuit of getting her to give him a chance. I also really loved all of the supporting characters in Jena's friends and family - including her kids, who feel like real kids. And because I really liked the connections in the community, I didn't mind the relaxed pace of the story. I also really liked how Caleb's own secret makes it so that he ends up truly belonging in his new home.

Now, the wait begins, I can't wait to see Hunter does next in her series. I wouldn't minds seeing more of Caleb and Jena, though I can see potential in Jenna's girl friends for some hard to get HEAs. ETA: it looks like I'll get my wish the next book is Alex and Ted's but we will still get to see more of Jena and Caleb and the gang:)

If you missed the prequel short, A Long Ride Home, you might want to check it out in order to tide you over until the March 5th release date for Shifting Dreams, the short gives a little background for the Jena's situation and it is also really quite touching.
