It’s a wonderful story and highly recommended - 'Rosette' (NY) five star reviewerIn this incredible true story "Judy" the heroine of the book narrates her own version of her life - a story of canine loyalty, she was truly 'man's best friend'.
Her amazing life started precariously as a young pup living rough on the streets of Shanghai where any food and comfort was in short supply. She had the great good fortune to be rescued from the streets by a young Chinese girl called Lee Ming and a few days later a chance meeting with some British sailors visiting her dog pound changed her life for ever.
Judy tells us of her early idyllic, carefree years as a dog mascot aboard the British Gun Boat HMS Gnat, life was good for Judy until Japanese aggression in China spilled out to full blown war in Asia and the Pacific. Judy’s many adventures include:
- Nearly drowning after falling into the river from the deck the HMS Gnat
- Being bombed and sunk while on board HMS Grasshopper
- Surviving a 200 mile forced march through jungle trying to reach the last of the rescue boats in Padang, Indonesia
- Surviving another sinking in boat that was torpedoed in the Malacca Strait
- On top of all that she went on to survive 3 brutal years in various Japanese POW camps
In 1946 Judy arrived in Great Britain and was awarded the Dicken Medal which is the highest bravery award for animals and went on to live another 4 years with fellow POW survivor and "best friend" Frank Williams in Britain and Africa.

Courage, Loyalty and Bravery

Heartwarming, heartwrenching amazing story of a courageous, loyal and brave dog who lived and served during World War II, became a prisoner of war, and then found a life of freedom with her human, Frank, who had been a prisoner of war with her. Beautifully written, and all the more amazing because the story is true. Each chapter begins with a narration of a phase in Judy's life, followed by what occurred as "told" by her. Always brave and loyal and with a heart of pure love, one can see why she was awarded the highest honor - a medal for her courage and bravery. It's a wonderful story and highly recommended!

Wonderfully heart-warming story from the dog's viewpoint.

The dog's role in our daily lives is often overlooked or simply taken for granted. This is a book about Judy, a canine Veteran of one of the biggest wars our world has ever known. I cried with sadness for the poor lonely puppy who lost her only "friend" in the world, and then with joy for the young mother who had puppies surrounded with love from her shipmates. She was sure her puppies would have a better shot at life than she'd had.
Judy the Big Hearted Heroine is the most heart-warming, uniquely-written, and heart-breaking book I've read in a while. I loved it from cover to cover and waited until I'd completely finished it before publishing a review.
I absolutely recommend this to all who have ever loved an animal.

Great book, would recommend

This is a touching story about a brave dog, who was able to withstand the vicissitudes of life through her courageous heart. There is so much to learn from this book. Glad that I purchased the book, and I enjoyed reading it. Great book, and a wonderful job from the author. Well deserved five star!
