Review
"Stout's aviation expertise sorts fact from fiction and drives to the bone and heart of the fighter pilot in World War II."
--Michael Franzak, author: "A Nightmare's Prayer"

"Stout's crisp, concise writing powers a narrative that highlights a collection of aviators who destroyed more than 700 German aircraft.  The book is certain to take its place with other memorable accounts of European combat."
--John F. Wukovits, author: "Black Sheep"

"This may be the finest book yet written about the air war over Europe during World War II."  --Air & Space Smithsonian

From the Inside Flap
In this follow-up to his award-winning Men Who Killed the Luftwaffe, Jay A. Stout focuses on one of the best and most decorated American fighter groups of World War II.  Stout combines the storytelling gifts and meticulous research of a seasoned historian with the combat experience of a former fighter pilot to tell the remarkable story of the USAAF's 352nd Fighter Group, the "Blue-Nosed Bastards of Bodney."  By war's end, this group of pilots--an assembly of true American characters--had flown 420 missions, logged nearly 60,000 combat hours, destroyed 776 enemy aircraft, and produced 29 aces, including George Preddy, the top scorer in the P-51 Mustang.

Stationed at Bodney, northeast of London, England, for most of the war, the 352nd Fighter Group flew as part of the famed U.S. Eighth Air Force, primarily as escorts for the B-17 and B-24 bombers that pounded Germany.  In the process, the group's P-47 Thunderbolts and P-51 Mustangs struck crippling blows against the Third Reich's fighter force, helping to render the Luftwaffe incapable of defeating Allied bombers and protecting the homeland from devastation.

Drawing on interviews with veterans of the 352nd Fighter Group, their letters home, and the unit's after-action reports, Stout reconstructs the experiences of World War II fighter pilots, from boyhood dreams of flight to wild dogfights in which milliseconds made the difference between life and death.  This isn't just the story of a single fighter group; it's the story of how the United States won the air war over Europe.

From the Back Cover
"Jay Stout the historian has teamed up with Jay Stout the fighter pilot to produce a first-class combat history of a first-class World War II fighter group."
--Eric Hammel, author of "The Road to Big Week"

"'Fighter Group' reminds us there is still much to be recorded about the Second World War, and Stout has established a level of expertise that will be hard to match."
--Barrett Tillman, author of "Whirlwind" and "Enterprise"

"A page-turning read about young men in high-speed air-to-air combat.  Who better to tell a tale about fighter pilots than a fighter pilot?  Jay 'Guinness' Stout is just that and has done just that with 'Fighter Group.'  His no-nonsense style of describing aerial combat only makes the incredible flying by the young pilots on both sides that much more realistic."
--Lt. Col. Brick Eisel, author of "Beaufighters in the Night"

Great history of the "Blue-Nosed Bastards"!
By Koba
The 352d Fighter Group was one of the most highly decorated American Fighter Groups in World War II, and was home to a number of top aces. This book is a detailed account of this highly effective fighter group, covering the activation of the group in 1942, its transfer to Europe, combat operations from late 1943 through April 1945, the conversion from the P-47 to the P-51, and the engagement with the Luftwaffe during Operation Bodenplatte in January 1945.

Jay Stout is a retired fighter pilot who understands what the 352nd did, and explains it in terms that are easy for non-aviators to understand. He does not merely recount who flew where, who got shot down, and who shot down the enemy, as some other rather boring air combat books do. He discusses the tactics and equipment in a readable and very entertaining fashion. More importantly, he describes the men so well that the reader feels genuine kinship with them. I was actually shocked and sad when some of them got killed! Stout illuminates the personalities of the pilots with plenty of anecdotes -- and a lot of them are funny. This is not another collection of "Greatest Generation" hero-worship stories, though. Stout presents the faults and failures of the men as well as their virtues. Also worth noting is that the author does not just tell us about the pilots, but also about the ground crews, who usually receive little attention in books about WW2 air combat.

This is the first full-length treatment of the 352nd, as the only other readily available work is a short Osprey publication. For that matter, there are very few histories of ANY World War II American Fighter Group that are NOT Osprey publications. The author uses wartime records and interviews with surviving members of the 352nd. Pilots were largely younger men, but even so they're all pretty old by now, and we are fortunate that the author spoke with them before they pass away.

Stout's book is a welcome addition to aviation history. I recommend this book to anyone interested in air combat in World War II.
