We had been sailing dinghies and a Folkboat for twenty years but have never looked upon ourselves as real sailors, but here we are, Peter and I, twenty five years later, having completed a 65,000 mile circumnavigation by ourselves in our own boat. Just an ordinary couple with no introductions to auspicious personages, no rally guide to pave the way and little money. We have had a fantastic time and been welcomed into grand houses and native huts, enjoyed the world and relished our freedom.
This book is a brief account of the preparations, voyaging, and of the remote Pacific Islands, where, previously, the only visitors were missionaries, government officials, traders or slavers. Thanks to advances in electronic navigation, we were among the privileged first visitors to arrive just as friends and be welcomed into island life. It also tells of robbery, shipwreck and the self-discovery of ourselves and our relationship.

Informative, Entertaining & Inspiring

This book tells the story of a couple who while approaching the age of 50, make the decision to sell up (house, cars, material possessions, etc), buy a sailboat and take off on the adventure of a lifetime.
The book covers a 7 year period, beginning in the UK and travelling west to the Carribean, through the Panama Canal, the South Pacific, New Zealand, Australia, Indonesia & ends with them hauling the boat out in Singapore for a couple of years where they take jobs for a spell to top up the travel kitty and continue their adventure.
The rest of their story (from Asia, back to the UK) is told in 2 further instalments.
I initially didn't like the writing style of this book as it sometimes seems to start a story and then in the next paragraph, jumps to another and leaves you wondering how the previous scene ends, but I guess trying to squeeze 7 years of adventures into a single book requires some pretty heavy editing.
I also found it was a little slow and repetitive early on (particularly as they travelled through the Carribean), where they had very little interaction with the locals and many of the stories were simply of drinks and socialising with other sailing crews in each port.
Once they entered the South Pacific though, I found I couldn't put this book down. Shirley's descriptions of the different cultures and customs they encountered at each of the destinations they visited, as well as her recounting of her interactions with the local people and wildlife made me envious of their adventures and keen to follow in their wake.
I also found that there was plenty of good practical advice for anyone contemplating a trip like this on a small, modest boat like they own.
As the name suggests, Seize The Day is a book about living life to the full and turning that dream into reality, before you are too old to enjoy it.

IMO, not bad, just a bit dated and slow

It's kind of an okay read, though Ms. Billing says she wrote for magazines. I'm not sure what magazines would buy this quality writing today. What else struck me with "Seize the Day" was that it was written 20-25 years ago and Ms. Billing - that must be her looking sleek and sexy on the cover in her blue one-piece - might be 80 years old now. Seize the day indeed!
Shirley and her husband - wish he would come along on my boat to help me fix stuff - give an uneven account here. Not much actual sailing info, but a lot of sitting on the beach with the natives and hanging out with other boaters and visiting relatives stuff. Nice in its own way I suppose and the whole world of S. Pacific "natives" in the '70s-early '80s is interesting ... a little.
The touring must have been terrific in those days and the one spot of real interest was when they holed their boat on a reef - perhaps a bit of carelessness at the helm there though the panic and efforts to save the boat and maybe themselves was very readable. Thank goodness for GPS today and I do admire their sailing with sextant and charts. She and Peter seem like the kind of people you would enjoy sharing a cocktail with at the end of the day.

Sailing and other small joys of life

What motivates you to drop everything and sail around the world?
If you think about glamorous adventures, breaking records, being famous... forget it !
You are going to: do the dishes, sweep the room (the cockpit actually), fix a broken engine and unclog the toilet.
Even so, as told by Shirley Billing, she and her husband, Peter, enjoyed every little moment in this seven year journey sailing around the world. As told by Shirley: "Baking bread was exciting, as I could never antecipate ...".
The narrated experience of meeting ordinary people, illiterate some times, poor most of the times, and always be treated with love and friendship - even if you can't speak the same language - is touching.
A couple living seven years in a small boat is potential for fights. They cleverly and playfully used God to avoid confrontation with each other.
Here are some of their prayers:
"Thank you Father for this food and please bring us safely to harbour. Please help me understand why Peter won't wash the dishes immediately after our meals. Amen"
or
"Dear Lord, we are greatful for all blessings, bute please help Shirley to remember to put the pencils in the rack on the navigation table."
Worth every line on the book.
