Cari Chandler paused in the doorway of the conference room. On the far wall was a portrait of her grandfather looking very young and very determined. Since he'd never been a "happy" man, she hardly noticed that he wasn't smiling. He certainly wouldn't be convivial at this moment when the grandson of his most-hated enemy was in his stronghold.

Since the late '70s the Chandlers and the Montroses had been feuding and trying to cut each other out of the video-game market. Her grandfather had won that long-ago skirmish by making a deal with a Japanese company, cutting Thomas Montrose out, but none of that mattered today as the Montrose heirs and their Playtone Games had just delivered the feudending blow with their hostile takeover of Infinity Games. And leaving Cari and her sisters, Emma and Jessi, to pick up the wreckage and try to forge some sort of deal that would save their jobs and their legacy.

But Cari as COO was the one who'd been chosen to deal with Declan Montrose. It made sense, since operations were her area, but the secret she'd been harboring for too long suddenly felt like it had a choke hold on her, and she wished she'd confided in her sisters so that maybe she wouldn't have to deal with Dec today.

The conference table was long and made of dark wood, and the chairs positioned around it were leather. She focused on the details of the room instead of the man she saw standing by the window. He hadn't changed much in the eighteen months since she'd last seen him.

From the back she could see his reddish-brown hair was a little longer than it had been before, but was still thick and curly where it hit his collar. His shoulders were still as broad, tapering to a narrow waist and that whipcord-lean frame that she'd remembered pressed against her as he'd held her. A shiver of sensual awareness coursed through her.

Don't. Don't think of any of that, she warned herself. Focus on the takeover. One problem at a time.

"Dec." She called his name. Her voice sounded strong, which pleased her since inside she was quaking. "I didn't think I'd see you again."

"I'm sure it's a pleasant surprise," he said with a sardonic grin as he left the window and walked over to stand not more than six inches from her.

The familiar smell of his spicy, outdoorsy aftershave surrounded her, and she closed her eyes as she remembered how strongly the scent had lingered on his skin right at the base of his neck. Then she forced herself to get it together, crossing her arms over her chest and remembering he was here for business. The knock at the door provided her with the distraction she needed. "Come in," she called.

Ally, her assistant, entered with two Infinity Games logo mugs, handing one to Dec and giving the other to Cari. Cari walked around to the head of the table, already feeling more in control now that Dec was on the other side of it from her. She was aware of Ally asking if Dec needed anything in his coffee and him answering he took it black, and then Ally was gone.

"Please sit down," she invited, gesturing to the chair across from hers.

"I don't remember you being so formal," he said as he pulled out a chair and took his seat.

She ignored that remark. Really, what could she say? From the moment she'd first seen him she'd been attracted to him. Even after she'd learned he was a Mon-trose and technically her family's enemy, she'd still wanted him.

"I assume you're here to talk about moving assets around in my company," she said.

He nodded. "I'll be spending the next six weeks doing an assessment of the assets in the company and on this campus here. I understand you have three different gaming divisions?"

Wow. She should have been prepared for it, but he'd just completely shut off his emotions and switched to business. She wanted to be able to do the same, but she'd never been that good at hiding what she felt. Cyborg, she'd heard him called. He lived up to that moniker today.

He looked over at her and she realized she was just staring at him. This wasn't going to work. She'd call Emma, her oldest sister and the chief executive officer of Infinity, as soon as he left and tell her that she or Jessi would have to work with Dec. Though to be fair, as chief marketing officer, Jessi wasn't really the one who should be handling Dec.

"Cari?"

"Sorry. Yes, they all report to me—online, console and mobile."

"I will need to set up meetings with everyone in the company. The way this will work is that each person will be assessed and rated, and then I will give a presentation to our combined board of directors with my recommendations."

"No problem. Emma mentioned you wanted to talk to the staff. Do you think you'll just be here one or two days a week?" she asked, mentally crossing her fingers.

"No. I want to set up an office so I can be here in the thick of things," he said, leaning forward. "Is that going to be a problem?"

"Not at all," she said with the only smile she could muster. She'd rather not see him ever again, but that wasn't going to happen and she was mature so she could deal with it. She knew her smile must have looked forced when he laughed.

"You were never good at hiding your feelings," he said.

She shook her head. Though his statement was true, it wasn't something that he could know from personal experience. They'd had a one-night stand, not a relationship. "Don't say it like that. You don't know me at all. We only had one date and one night together."

"I think I got a fairly good impression of you," he said.

"Really?" she asked. She told herself to let it go and just concentrate on the business end of things, but that was going to be impossible. "Then why'd you leave me alone in that hotel room?"

He leaned back in his chair and took a long swallow of his coffee before standing up to pace around the room to her side of the table. He leaned back against the table and stared down at her, and she was tempted to stand up so he wasn't towering over her. But she didn't want him to think he intimated her.

"I'm not really a man for attachments," he said at last. "And though you think I don't know you, Cari Chandler, I'd have to be a blind fool not to see that you care too much."

She wanted to deny it, but the truth was she was the bleeding heart of the Chandler family. She volunteered, donated time and money to charities and causes and she'd fallen for more than one sob story at work. Emma had been furious at first, until she realized it made their employees loyal because they felt that the executive management cared.

"I wasn't going to cling to you and profess undying love, Dec," she said. She barely knew him after one sex-filled night. She might have been interested in seeing him again and getting to know him better, but she'd learned all she needed to know when he'd left her. "It was only one night."

"It was a fabulous night, Cari," he said, putting his hand on the back of her chair and spinning her around to face him. "Maybe I should remind you of how good we are together."

She pushed the chair back, standing up. It was time for her to take control of this meeting. "Not necessary. While I remember the details of the night, it's really the morning after that stuck with me."

"That's why I left," he said in that wry way of his. "I'm not good at dealing with the aftermath."

"Aftermath?" she asked.

"You know, the emotional stuff women usually bring up," he said. "The clingy things."

She shook her head. It was clear that a one-night stand was all that Dec intended for her to be. With her secret looming in her mind, she knew she had to say something about their night together, but for now she wasn't going to. She would focus on the business and try to figure out a way to save her family's legacy from being dismantled and destroyed.

Though she had to admit hearing Dec talk made her sad because she wanted better for herself. She had wanted to hear him say he wished he hadn't left and that he'd thought of her every day… Probably what he would term emotionally clingy stuff.

"Disappointed?" he asked.

"I guess I know why an eligible billionaire like you is still single," she said, trying not to be disenchanted that he was exactly like she'd thought he was. She'd hoped she'd just caught him on a bad day.

"Maybe the right girl just hasn't tried hard enough to change me," he said with a cocky half grin.

"Oh, you don't seem like the sort of man who can be changed," she said.

"Touche. I'm happy with my life. But that doesn't mean I don't know how to appreciate a woman like you when our paths cross."

She wanted to stay angry with him, but he was honest and she couldn't fault him there. Even though she'd hoped for longer with Dec, she'd known from the moment they'd gone to dinner that all he wanted was an affair.

"I think I'd have more luck changing the direction of the Santa Ana winds," she said.

"Have dinner with me and we can find out," he said.

"Would you be willing to discuss Playtone Games being a silent partner in Infinity?"

He laughed. "Not happening."

"Then neither is dinner." No matter how much he cajoled she needed distance and a chance to really think before she just jumped back into something foolish with him.

"We have to work together, so I don't think us spending time together outside the office would be wise," she said at last. She used to be more impulsive, but wasn't anymore. Her one-night stand with this man had reminded her there were consequences for acting without thinking.

"The Cari I know doesn't make decisions with only her head."

"I've changed," she said bluntly. Maybe if she hadn't fallen for his smooth-talking ways and blunt sexuality. What?

"I like it," he said slickly.

Cari knew she had to face facts that the man she'd had a one-night stand with was back in town. And it was becoming abundantly clear that a corporate takeover was the least of her problems. She was going to have to tell him about her son…his son.

Their son.

And she had no idea how to do that.

Cari had changed. That was easy to see even for a guy who'd spent only one night in her company. Dec knew things between them had always seemed complicated. Never more so than now. Their families were hated enemies of each other and his cousin, Keller Montrose, the CEO of Playtone Games, wasn't going to be happy unless Infinity was completely broken apart so that nothing of Gregory Chandler's legacy remained.

And this pretty blonde woman standing before him was going to be nothing more than collateral damage.

Dec had never been able to see her as his hated enemy. From the first moment he'd laid eyes on her he'd wanted to know more about her—and not so he could figure out how to use that information to take over her company.

Being adopted, Dec never truly felt like a real Mon-trose and was always striving to prove he was as loyal as both Kell and their other cousin, Allan McKinney.

Being back in California, conveniently with Cari, seemed his chance to do his job and continue to prove his worth to the Montrose family, as well as hopefully reconnect with the woman he hadn't been able to forget. With her thick blond hair that fell in smooth waves past her shoulders and her pretty cornflower-blue eyes, she'd haunted him. He couldn't forget the way she'd looked up at him as he'd held her in his arms.

Now that he had the chance to get a proper look at her, he could see the year and a half they'd been apart had added a quiet confidence to her. He started at her tiny feet in those pretty brown two-inch heels and moved upward. Her ankles were still trim, but her calves seemed more muscular. The hem of her skirt kept him from seeing any more of her legs but her hips seemed fuller…more pronounced. Her waist was still impossibly small, he noted, as the button on her jacket flaunted. Her breasts—whoa, they were a lot larger. She'd been slim and small but she was much—

"Eyes up here, buddy," she said, pointing to her baby blues.

He shrugged and then smiled at her. "I can see that you have changed a lot in the past year. Your figure is much fuller than before, but I like that."

He walked toward her with a long, languid stride and she backed up until there was nowhere for her to go. She put her hand up to stop him, keeping him an arm's length away. He stood there, staring down into her eyes, and had to admit there was something different about her. It was in her eyes. She watched him more closely than she had before.

She looked tired and he thought, well, duh, Playtone had finally gotten the upper hand on Infinity Games and she was more than likely worried about her job.

He backed away from her. "Sorry. I didn't mean to come on too strong. I'm sure losing your company to us was a shock."

"That's a bit of an understatement."

He smiled at the way she said it. "I'm a little jetlagged still."

"Jet-lagged? I wasn't aware that there was a time zone between the Infinity Games campus and the Play-tone offices," she said.

She gave up nothing. And he wondered how he could have missed this side to Cari eighteen months ago. But then he'd been in full-on lust and it was safe to say his brain hadn't been controlling him.

"I've been in Australia for a little over a year managing our takeover of Kanga Games."

"You let them keep their corporate identity," she said.

"They didn't screw our grandfather over."

"My sisters and I didn't either. We've always dealt with you and your cousins fairly."

"I'm afraid that doesn't matter when it comes to revenge," he said.

"Surely profit matters."

"It does."

She nodded and moved back to her chair. He sat down and so did she. She steepled her fingers together and he noticed she wore a ring on her right hand now that she hadn't before. It was a platinum band of hearts with a row of diamonds in the center. It seemed the kind of ring a lover would have given her. Was she involved with someone now?

Maybe that was where her new confidence stemmed from. She had a lover now. Well, he could be happy for her. Even though he regretted that he might not ever get to kiss her again.

"When did you get back from Australia?" she asked as she toyed with the ring. Those little gestures seemed to indicate her nervousness, though the rest of her body language didn't support that.

"Saturday, but I'm still adjusting. And seeing you again surprised me," he admitted, reaching for his briefcase, which he'd stowed next to his chair, and putting it on the table. He had his computer and the files he'd already started studying on the takeover.

"How did it surprise you? I knew you'd be here this morning," she said. "Didn't you know it would be me?"

"Yes, Emma informed me via email," he said. He wasn't about to tell her that he'd never expected to react so strongly to her presence. Not now. He'd thought since they'd slept together all the chemistry would be gone…but he'd been wrong.

The mystery of her body had been revealed to him. There wasn't an inch of it he didn't remember, though he realized now, with the flesh-and-blood woman standing before him, that those memories were a pale imitation of the real thing.

It was good..SPOILERS
By Amazon Customer
I liked this book. I do wish that there was more love shown on both of their parts. I BARELY felt it and more from the hero than the heroine because she said she was already in love with him but with him, you saw him fall in love. The hero was scared about having a family but as soon as he saw the picture of his son, he was in serious awe. It is his first blood relative that he has ever had and he is stunned by that. Of course he is mad at the heroine for not telling him but he gets over it fast. Neither one can stay mad at the other. They have a disagreement and then they are laughing or smiling at something. It was cool to see a couple who does not go days without talking because of anger. I do think that the heroine overreacted at the end but she also realized that she did that same night. The hero also felt he should have handle the ending better and goes after her after he sets a plan in motion to fix it. They literally make up the VERY next morning!!! The reason I took a star away was for an editing issue. While making up, the heroine and her son go on the hero's boat and he kisses them hello, he then pulls heroine into a tight hug where she wraps both arms around him. Where was the baby?? That is a pretty big thing to forget to write in especially after he was just mentioned. It is a boat so they did not put him down just to hug and make out. It just stuck in my mind that the baby was missing for a moment and then the couple are in the car with the baby again! Oh well!! It was a decent story!

Definitely take a moment for this delightful read
By Leslie A. Miller
So today while reading one of my favorite authors blogs I was introduced to this story. I was intrigued by the description and trusting Ms. Galen's comments purchased the book. Instead of writing the last few chapters of my book I took a moment to enjoy another writers work. As an author we rely not only on word of mouth but on the reviews of our readers. Sometimes those readers can be harsh and overlook a great story when they come upon errors in the book. To be honest when I read my mind had always overlooked those errors being so caught up in the storyline that it didn't matter. After getting my own share of bad reviews where readers loved the story but picked apart the editing I became more aware of what I read. So to those critics out there yes you will find typo errors in this book and to others who have commented about the ending and question what happened to the baby, he's there, he's not, he's back so what. It takes a lot to put so much of yourself into the books you write. Like children you give birth to them then hope they grow without much damage. You rejoice when a reader gets sucked into the story and falls for your characters and you hurt a little every time a reader takes a dig at it.

This was a well written story where not only did you fall for the characters but as she developed their lives you fell deeper in love with them. You felt the pain, felt the fear, felt the loss and felt the joy. I am truly pleased Shana Galen introduced me to this author and look forward to reading more of her work. My advice to any reader who is considering this book, get it. Don't try so hard to look for the mistakes in any book but enjoy the journey the author is taking you on. You will not be disappointed in this journey.

Another good one
By Adrian Love
I really enjoyed Amanda Renee's second book, Home to the Cowboy. She has produced another well written, easy read. Ever is a beautiful character who brought tears to my eyes more than once. All of the characters are well developed, believable and tie nicely into the first book, Betting on Texas. I look forward to more of her work.

4.5 Star Review
By Harlequin Junkie Blog
In Home to the Cowboy by Amanda Renee, Tess Dalton is back home to help her mom with a wedding and to forget her recent heartbreak and loosing her job. She had hoped to be able to think things in her own time without having the reminder of how she was dumped by her fiancé only to find out that everyone in town knows about every detail.

Cole Langtry is working hard to make his now deceased father's dream of building an equine-assisted therapy facility on Bridle Dance Ranch come true. But when his father changed his will before his death leaving the land to his wife and the farm split into equal part between Cole and his brothers it created a problem. Cole and one of his brothers are for continuing with their father's dream, while his other two brothers want to make a profit, not build something that will not give them any profit. Without all of them or at least the majority agreeing the facility cannot be built.

Now that Tess is back, meeting with Cole is not easy. They used to be best friends but when they took things to the next level she was afraid that the long distance relationship would not work very well with her working in the city and him joining the rodeo. But the problem that arose was the rodeo bunnies showing up topless and propositioning Cole in front of Tess, something that she took as his possible infidelity since he knew them all too well and that eventually lead to led arguments and their breakup.

But Cole and Tess come together more often thanks to their interfering mothers who are friends, and slowly start to build on the friendship they used to have. But the one person that will bring them together is Ever, the little girl that was the one responsible for creating the dream of building an equine-assisted therapy facility. Ever with her strength and determination regardless of all the problems she's had since she was born and then abandoned, shows Tess what truly matters.

In order for Tess and Cole to have their happily ever after they will have to lay all their cards on the table and tell each other how they truly feel and what really matter before they loose all of their dreams to unimportant details.

Don't miss Home to the Cowboy by Amanda Renee, romantic and heartbreaking, but oh so very sweet story.

"Home to the Cowboy" was very well written and quite entertaining. The characters seem life like after reading a few chapters. Excellent information regarding equine-assisted therapy for children--opened my eyes to a topic I never thought much about. From the ratings I have seen, others agree with me that the book is a "must read". Looking forward to the next one is series. Keep up the good work Amanda Renee.

THREE BROTHERS WANT HER. ONLY ONE WILL WIN.

Curvy Penny McDaniels, a self-described "bean-counter" who spends more time fantasizing about a different life than actually going after one, is shocked when her bosses at Buchanan Enterprises show her more than a passing interest in her ample curves. In fact, she discovers in the most scandalized way, the bad boy billionaires, legendary in their sexual appetites, have hungered for those bountiful curves for quite a while and they're done waiting. A contract, an obscene amount of money, and a promise of pleasure beyond her wildest dreams, Penny is sucked into the dizzying Buchanan world of money and privilege.

Nolan and Vince, twin brothers who delight in sharing everything, set their sights on their luscious accountant and when they hatch an indecent plan to put her in their bed, they don't hesitate -- no matter the cost. Penny is everything they'd dreamed she'd be and soon enough, their feelings for Penny go beyond the physical but they never imagined their older brother, Dillon, would return home and threaten everything in their world.

Review
Praise from readers!---------------------------"...Alexx Andria writes a most captivating story that I would recommend any lover of this genre to read." -- verified Amazon review---------------------------

From the Author
Dear Reader,

Not your typical romance, right? Some readers have questioned how easily the men share one woman but that's what makes this story so special. For Dillon and Penny, love did not come easily but once they found it (or realized they couldn't live without one another) they didn't let the past interfere, which includes the memory of past lovers. I guess I was intrigued by the pull of such a unique love story. I hope you were, too!

Warmly,
Alexx

Bought By the Billionaire Brother #1
By EAlfaro
Even though the story is about a billionaire family, it shows the family ups and downs and problems that all families have. This just had more great sex and sharing of the one girl all three brothers that want to be involved with her.

Don't Let the Title Fool you
By Cece
This story was well written and the character development was great. I wish Penny had come to her confidence sooner. I loved the family mystery and then the truth coming out, it showed how money and secrets can hurt a family. I loved that the lead female was plus-size and that the story NEVER hide that fact. It so hard to find well written stories/movies/shows that have a lead full-figure woman that is sexual and wanted but sought after men.

Good Story
By Amazon Customer
Not worth the money if you buy the series individually, they are ridiculously over priced! Not to mention short to boot. Great read if you purchase the bundle which I like to think of it as the whole book, as it seems they only split story into 6 different "series". I hope this review helps!

Losing Hope Chapter One
My heart rate is signaling for me to just walk away. Les has reminded me more than once that it’s not my business. She’s never been a brother before, though. She has no idea how hard it is to sit back and not let it be my business. That’s why, right now, this son-of-a-bitch is my number-one priority.

I slide my hands into the back pockets of my jeans and hope to hell I can keep them there. I’m standing behind the couch, looking down at him. I don’t know how long it’ll take him to notice I’m here. Considering the grip he has on the chick straddling his lap, I doubt he’ll notice for a while. I remain behind them for several minutes while the party continues around us, everyone completely unaware that I’m a fraction away from losing my mind. I would take out my phone so that I’d have evidence, but I couldn’t do that to Les. She doesn’t need a visual.

“Hey,” I finally say, unable to contain my silence a second longer. If I have to watch him palm this chick’s breast one more time without a single ounce of respect for his relationship with Les, I’ll rip his fucking hand off.

Grayson tears his mouth away from hers and tilts his head back, looking up at me with glossed-over eyes. I can see the fear settle in when it clicks—when he finally realizes that the last person he thought would be here tonight actually showed up.

“Holder,” he says, pushing the girl off his lap. He struggles to his feet but can hardly stand up straight. He looks at me pleadingly, pointing at the girl, who’s now adjusting her barely-there skirt. “This isn’t . . . it’s not what it looks like.”

I slide my hands out of my back pockets and fold my arms across my chest. My fist is closer to him now and I have to clench it, knowing how good it would feel to punch his face in.

I look down to the floor and inhale a breath. Then another. And one more just for show, since I’m really enjoying watching him squirm. I shake my head and raise my eyes back to his. “Give me your phone.”

The confusion on his face would be comical if I weren’t so pissed. He laughs and attempts to back up a step, but bumps into the coffee table. He catches himself by pressing his hand onto the glass and straightens back up. “Get your own fucking phone,” he mumbles. He doesn’t look back at me as he maneuvers his way around the coffee table. I calmly walk around the couch and intercept him, holding out my hand.

“Give me your phone, Grayson. Now.”

I’m not really at an advantage sizewise, since we’re about the same build. However, I’m definitely at an advantage if you take my anger into consideration, and Grayson can clearly see that. He takes a step back, which probably isn’t a very smart move considering he’s backing himself straight into the corner of the living room. He fumbles with his pocket and finally pulls out his phone.

“What the hell do you want my phone for?” he says. I grab it out of his hands and dial Les’s number without hitting send. I hand it back to him.

“Call her. Tell her what a bastard you are and end it.”

Grayson looks down at his phone, then back up at me. “Go fuck yourself,” he spits.

I inhale a calming breath, then roll my neck and pop my jaw. When that doesn’t help ease my urge to make him bleed, I reach forward, grab the collar of his shirt and shove him hard against the wall, pinning his neck with my forearm. I remind myself that if I kick his ass before he makes the call, my remaining calm for the past ten minutes will have been pointless.

My teeth are clenched, my jaw is tight, and my pulse is pounding in my head. I’ve never hated anyone more than in this moment. The intensity of what I wish I could do to him right now is even scaring me.

I look him hard in the eyes and let him know how the next few minutes are about to play out. “Grayson,” I say through clenched teeth. “Unless you want me to do what I really want to do to you right now, you will put the phone to your ear, you will call my sister, and you will end it. Then you’re going to hang up the phone and never speak to her again.” I press my arm harder against his neck, taking note of the fact that his face is now redder than his shirt, due to lack of oxygen.

“Fine,” he grumbles, attempting to free himself from the hold I have on him. I wait until he looks down at the phone and hits send before I release my arm and let go of his shirt. He puts the phone to his ear and never stops looking at me as we both stand still and wait for Les to answer.

I know what this will do to her, but she has no idea what he does behind her back. No matter how many times she hears it from other people, he’s somehow able to weasel his way back into her life every time.

Not this time. Not if I have any control over it. I won’t sit back and let him do this to my sister anymore.

“Hey,” he says into the phone. He tries to turn away from me to speak to her, but I shove his shoulder back against the wall. He winces.

“No, babe,” he says nervously. “I’m at Jaxon’s house.” There’s a long pause while he listens to her speak. “I know that’s what I said, but I lied. That’s why I’m calling. Les, I . . . I think we need some space.”

I shake my head, letting him know that he needs to make it an absolute break-up. I’m not looking for him to give her space. I’m looking for him to give my sister permanent freedom.

He rolls his eyes and flips me off with his free hand. “I’m breaking up with you,” he says flatly. He allows her to talk while he remains silent. The fact that he’s showing no remorse whatsoever proves what a heartless dick he is. My hands are shaking and my chest tightens, knowing exactly what this is doing to Les right now. I hate myself for forcing this to happen, but Les deserves better, even if she doesn’t think she does.

“I’m hanging up now,” he says into the phone.

I shove his head back against the wall and force him to look at me. “Apologize to her,” I say quietly, not wanting her to hear me in the background. He closes his eyes and sighs, then ducks his head.

“I’m sorry, Lesslie. I didn’t want to do this.” He pulls the phone from his ear and abruptly ends the call. He stares at the screen for several seconds. “I hope you’re happy,” he says, looking back up at me. “Because you just broke your sister’s heart.”

That’s the last thing Grayson says to me. My fist meets his jaw twice before he hits the floor. I shake out my hand, back away from him, and make my way to the exit. Before I even reach my car, my phone is buzzing in my back pocket. I pull it out and don’t even look at the screen before answering it.

“Hey,” I say, attempting to control the trembling anger in my voice when I hear her crying on the other end. “I’m on my way, Les. It’ll be okay, I’m on my way.”

•   •   •

It’s been an entire day since Grayson made the call, but I still feel guilty, so I tack on an extra two miles to my evening run for self-inflicted punishment. Seeing Les torn up like she was last night wasn’t something I had expected. I realize now that having him call her like I did probably wasn’t the best way of handling things, but there’s no way I could just sit back and allow him to dick around on her like he was.

The most unexpected thing about Les’s reaction was that her anger wasn’t solely placed on Grayson. It was as if she was pissed at the entire male population. She kept referring to men as “sick bastards,” pacing her bedroom floor back and forth, while I just sat there and watched her vent. She finally broke down, crawled into bed, and cried herself to sleep. I lay awake, knowing I had a hand in her heartache. I stayed in her room the whole night, partly to make sure she was okay, but mostly because I didn’t want her picking up the phone and calling Grayson in a moment of desperation.

She’s stronger than I give her credit for, though. She didn’t attempt to call him last night and she’s made no attempt to call him today. She didn’t get much sleep last night, so she went to her room before lunch to nap. However, I’ve been pausing outside her bedroom door throughout the day just to make sure I couldn’t hear her on the phone, so I know she hasn’t made any attempts to call him. At least while I’ve been home. In fact, I’m pretty sure the heartless phone call from him last night was exactly what she needed to finally see him for who he really is.

I kick my shoes off at the door and walk to the kitchen to refill my water. It’s Saturday night and I would normally be heading out with Daniel, but I already texted him to let him know I was staying in tonight. Les made me promise I would stay in with her because she didn’t want to go out and chance running into Grayson yet. She’s lucky she’s cool, because I don’t know many seventeen-year-old guys who would give up a Saturday night to watch chick flicks with his heartbroken sister. But then again, most siblings don’t have what Les and I have. I don’t know if our close relationship has anything to do with the fact that we’re t...

Stunning

My review of Hopeless is a more balanced review dealing with both the emotion and the plot. This is more a treatise of the effects both Hopeless and Losing Hope had on me as a reader. The plot of Losing Hope is stellar, that is beyond question, the emotion is devastating, the characters unforgettable. The experience...read on -

There was one word that described my experience reading Hopeless and writing its review: Brutal. I didn't think anything could surpass that but Losing Hope has destroyed me. Every emotion that I drowned in whilst reading Sky's story came flooding back and swept me under until by the end I felt like I was gasping for breath and could go on no longer. Needless to say I've pretty much curled up in a ball, trying to think all the happy thoughts since then.

I actually broke down sobbing at the dinner table telling my family about the book and couldn't eat. I'm sobbing now writing this review. I knew it would be affecting after how I let Hopeless in but I honestly didn't think Holder's story would be as brutal and upsetting. To be honest for most of the book I was able to remain at a distance from the story, a curious observer. I knew what was coming so I felt prepared. I could cope with all the shocks, I had cried with Sky, I knew Holder couldn't possibly be worse, after all, he was almost an observer like me right? Wrong.

Holder's grief is palpable. A pulsing entity of pain and sadness from page one. Hoover with an unrelenting pace drags us along with Holder through his sister's suicide, his guilt at not being able to save her, his heart's momentarily leap of optimism when he first meets Sky and believes she is his childhood friend, the doubt that creeps in as he gets to know her and his joy at falling for Sky, his wish that Hope is at peace and that this exceptional young woman is someone he can forge a future with, a future with Sky filled with anticipation and belief in good and not a reminder of HopeLess - a life of regret.

There aren't enough adjectives to describe the roller-coaster of emotional turmoil, happiness, fleeting joy, crushing blows and eventual peace that one experiences reading this book.

The story is familiar but there are small moments, moments where Sky's perception of Holder's actions shaped her story only for us as the readers to discover they were something completely different. At all times his goal was to protect Sky from a pain so immense surely no-one could survive it. Her strength coupled with his love formed a bond stronger than titanium and together they were able to face the horrifying events that tainted their combined pasts. Holder's self-blame is heartbreaking to read and you can't help but sympathise and rejoice as he discovers his own personal form of therapy, writing in his sister's notebook, sharing his thoughts, paving his path to healing with moments of joy mingled with crushing pain. It's gut punching at its best.

The chemistry between Sky and Holder is almost overwhelming when combined with his colliding wishes that she is indeed the friend he has never forgiven himself for losing and his desire that she really is Sky so he can protect her from the inevitable pain of coming to terms with a stolen childhood. It is beyond upsetting as the memories from Hopeless come flooding back and the feeling of helplessness as you watch two people desperately try to survive a pain that cuts deeper than the sharpest knife edge and struggle to endure it and come out the other side with scars that hopefully will heal.

There are moments of light relief which are a welcome distraction but never quite ease the heavy ache in the pit of your stomach. As the book progresses my role as curious observer became a struggle to maintain and then Chapter Forty-seven-and-a-half happened...

Holder says that Devastation is something that should only be allowed to refer to mothers who have lost children - by the end of this chapter I can honestly say that it can be used by readers of this book too. The past that we think we have finally got a grip on, the story we think we know is ripped from our trusting souls and turned completely on its head.

There are no words that can really do this book justice and my paltry attempt above is unworthy but suffice to say the story is one that will never leave me. I ended my review of Hopeless with a sentence that I think is only fitting that it be included as an edited version here too as it truly encapsulates all the FEELS -

This story of Sky and Holder captivated me from the stunning prologue of Hopeless through reveal after reveal after reveal until the ending of Losing Hope when I thought I finally had it all figured out and no way could I be bested again when my knees were taken out from under me and I was once again left me breathless, speechless but thankfully - not hopeless.

It took me a few days to finish Losing Hope because life kept getting all up in my damn way. And then I had to take a few more days to reflect. It's one of those books that need reflection, because you just have to find one thing that isn't beautifully perfect.

Which I couldn't do, by the way.

This was definitely a Hoover book. Not only does it completely suck you in, but the words are absolute magic. Somehow, once again, Colleen takes these simple letters and rearranges, bends, and fits them into something that is nothing less than a piece of art.

I'm sort of a self-proclaimed Will lover, or just Slammed in general. I know, you're probably wondering what the hell Will has to do with this. Well, when I read Hopeless I definitely liked it. It was well written, I liked the story, and I could see a few rereads in the future. Losing Hope?

Holy crap.

Sorry Will, you've been moved. Holder has pushed Will out, sat his ass down, and taken camp in that spot. As Holder cracks open his beer and gets comfortable, he's giving Will the "Better luck next time, buddy." look.

I can't wait to finish these next few books I have to read just so I can get back to Holder for another read.

Losing Hope begins with us meeting Holder pre-Sky. It's actually Les who we initially learn about, and Colleen does not waste any time in taking us down a notch. Oh no, this book does not begin on a high note at all. We knew it was going to happen, but damn, woman. Go big or go home, right?

We watch the fallout, and why Holder becomes the person he is. How he was forced to handle the situation, and choices he made, which all lead up to meeting Sky. This isn't short, Colleen takes her time giving us the base to Holder. And those letters? I could not think of a better way to express what needed to be said to the reader. It was heartbreaking, the pain and different stages of coping were evident, and we got the information we needed.

I adored Daniel, Holder's BFF. The way he supported Holder upon returning to school was the best. The students and teachers were unpleasant and Daniel made me laugh. A lot.

So did Holder.

"Every single shelf is stuffed with Les's jeans. They're all folded neatly on the shelves of the refrigerator and it pisses me off because this is where the food should be and I'm ducking hungry."

Okay, so Holder finally meets Sky. I think seeing it all from his perspective actually made the story better. The way he so thoroughly loves her. Takes care of her. Even while dealing with his own steamy pile of crap, he makes hers better.

There are important parts throughout Hopeless that I was dying to see from Holder's POV. Dramatic moments that I can't really put out there without spoiling, but seeing them through Holder? Ohmigod, emotions. Normally, I'd say that is a bad thing, but I couldn't stop reading.

Even the parts that weren't so vital or climatic were better through Holder.

"Right now. She said right now. That's nice because I conveniently don't have any prior engagements right now. I can do right now."

I loved seeing Sky through Holder's eyes. The way he adored and accepted her. Accepted her crazy lifestyle, and no-pregnancy requests by Sky's mom. I think Sky was even funnier from Holder's side,

"Laugh out loud.
She actually typed laugh out loud.
I really do lol, then I put my phone in my pocket and head to my car."

The ending to Losing Hope far exceeds Hopeless, but for a reason. This is Holder's ending, not Sky's. We needed more for Holder to be settled because his story was more deeply tangled. It was brought together beautifully, and ended in the most perfect way.

I wanted to go more in-depth with the story, but I can't without spoiling either Hopeless or Losing Hope. So you'll have to trust me when I say this book is the best yet from Colleen-ducking-Hoover.

Oh, and Colleen? Nice product placement.

Laugh out loud.

5 Hot For Holder Stars
By Momma Romance
So excuse me while I fangirl just a bit on this because this book was AMAZING!\

I'll be honest, when I first heard that Colleen Hoover was going to do an alternate POV for Hopeless I thought it was a horrible idea. Hopeless was such an amazing book (see my review here) I was really worried that it would be like other POV books that were almost literally the same book rewritten with little tidbits thrown in for the sake of calling in an alternate POV.

But holy wow was I proved wrong! Colleen Hoover found a way to write Dean Holders story without it sounding anything like a copycat of the original book, there is so much in the book that was unexpected. And the way she did it was just genius (you'll see what I mean...but I don't want to give it away!) It was like a brand new book! I was in tears by the 3rd chapter and was immediately reminded why I loved Hopeless so much. Now don't get me wrong, it's an alternate POV so there are plenty of times where the book will coincide with Hopeless but it was written so well that I actually had to double take a few times! The best part was that we finally get answers to some of the questions about Holders life from the first book!

And the ending......OMFG, I totally ugly cried (and I was in the freaking drive-thru!!) but it was the most perfect ending. I easily give Losing Hope 5 stars because I wouldn't change a single thing!

*Note: I received this ARC via NetGalley in return for an honest review*
