Poor Quality Printed Edition

The quality of this edition is very poor. When I did a search for this title I didn't see any publishers I recognized, so I ordered this version. It is a strange copy with almost non-existent margins, long text lines, and a thin cover. When I went back to the "Look Inside" feature, I could then see an edition by Puffin featured down the sidebar. This thin copy was damaged during shipping, so I returned it and got the Puffin edition instead. (Wish I understood Amazon's search algorithms better so I could find good quality products on the first search page...)

A good reference book.

This is quite a thorough reference book for Baum's The Wonderful Wizard of Oz. It contains about 70 pages of biographical information about Baum, a history of the Oz series including some color plates, and related discussions; a reproduction of The Wonderful Wizard of Oz printed with correct colors with thorough annotations; a 20 page section about W. W. Denslow's illustrations beyond the collaboration with Baum; and 20 pages of bibliography.

Hearn makes a point of saying that the reproduction of the Wizard reproduces the colors correctly; this is probably less of an issue now that high quality facsimile editions are available, unlike say the Dover edition of 1960. There are plenty of annotations, often fairly long, which are interesting but aren't in the category of opening up whole new worlds of perspective on the book. There are also some b&w photos and some other illustrations which hadn't been previously published. The Annotated Wizard is probably most of interest to those with a particular fascination about Oz, and those who are interested in a historical perspective and context for Baum's first Oz book. It would have been nice if it were printed on higher quality paper -- especially the color plates.

Beautiful book, I could look at it for hours!

The artwork is amazing in this book! It is the coolest pop up book I have ever seen. It was so fun looking through the book for the first time. Every page was an adventure. I would not recommend this book for small children, unless they are very well supervised, since the pages could rip or get ruined. I did look at the book with some of my nephews, who were enjoying looking at it with me. They loved seeing the pictures and hearing the story (I shortened the story). I went through and read the story myself afterwards. I have seen other pop up books by Robert Sabuda, and I have been very impressed. He is a great artist, and is very creative about how he plans the pop up pages.

Full of facts the author is well versed in this stuff of life.

This book on mitochondria is not a long read and the last 22% is about the author and the references. It can seem a bit too scientific at first with all the chemistry and biology lessons, but I still found it very interesting. He his very well versed in this subject and he is on a mission to get his message out. I was surprised to learn that mitochondria have their own DNA, go figure. The good news he points to his that mitochondria can be subject to biogenesis. Two ways we help that along is with exercise namely aerobic and using three supplements with the 'objective is to achieve a wide array of beneficial changes.' Two of the supplements are used by body builders, but I would be surprised if they know of the benefits to our cellular power plants. Your left hanging a bit, in that he does not tell what dosage, or from where to buy them. I found similar supplements on the net, though, and the price was not crazy. It is a worthwhile read on such an important subject, similar to how DNA knowledge has strongly affected the course of events..

Cheryl begins writing letters to her mother as an attempt to keep the conversation going, hanging on to the one daily ritual she looks forward to, while unflinchingly visiting the dark caverns of grief, despair and heartbreak. She becomes an accidental poet and painter, expressing her “messy” feelings that can be difficult to talk about. During the first year of acute grief, she took solace in the smallest of blessings, a year of not having to be fashionably dressed, and an unimpeachable way out of unwanted social invites.

After a few months of writing letters, Cheryl discovers she wants much more than to just write her mother about the unending pain of loss. A magical moment that changes her life comes in the form of an instinct – why can’t she continue to write her mom daily, and receive a letter back from her mother? It’s the best way that she knows how to continue their relationship, in a way that feels real and reciprocal.

“I write to my mother, and she writes me back. I ask her questions; she answers. She still tells me to go to bed earlier, and she reminds me that no matter where she is, she will always be my mother”.

The letters reveal Cheryl’s struggle in the different facets of grief – searching for the beloved, wanting to join them in death; anger, extreme fatigue, and even euphoria specific to grief. The letters remind her that her mother’s love and attention continue on, and the growth of the mother/daughter relationship is no longer limited to the physical world.

Inspiring and Cathartic

Who are you without your parents? Do our loved ones leave intentionally when they die? Can we still communicate with them? How do we find our way after a deveastating personal loss?
These are the questions explored in Cheryl Kain's accessible, thoughtful and life-affirming book. Having recently lost a beloved father, I found this book a powerful cathartic key and a bridge to owning my loss. It also allowed me to review my thoughts on what sustains me and confirmed my believe that those who are gone from this world are still with us in myriad ways. You might get a little impatient at some points, but this is an honest journey through grief--showing how destructive and non-linear it can be. As I became impatient with Cheryl's grief, I realized a was impatient with my own--and this gave me the chance to re-set my expectations during a challenging year. It was well worth reading through to see the insights she gained--and her wonderful mom's humor shines through. Thank you Amazon for making this book available!!

Heartwarming, Inspiring story!

No one can love you like your mother, and when she is gone, how can your world ever be normal again? In Letters to My Mama, Cheryl Kain takes the the reader on an absolutely beautiful, heartwarming and touching journey of her struggle to accept her mother's death. We feel the depth of Ms. Kain's grief and its suffocating effects until finally the author finds hope in written conversations she has with her mother. This is a story of the unique relationship that only a mother and daughter can have, and it so beautifully illustrates how even after our mothers are gone, their love and lessons continue to live within us.

A must read for any grieving daughter

While this book is titled "an adopted daughter's journey" I believe the author speaks to the grief of every daughter who has experienced the death of her mother. The author understands the language of grief. Se talks about her mother just exiting.....one day she is there and the next day she is just gone leaving that great, gaping hole. Those of us who have been through it will know exactly.
