I want Amazon to make this a true periodical, which it is supposed to be ... a quarterly delivery of absolutely wonderful samples of foods and advice, matching the skill and knowledge proffered on the author's NPR show, The Splendid Table. Please help her continue to provide this brief but elegant and highly useful presentations, reuse, and techniques and tidbits. Sort of like the radio program. Please ... allow me to subscribe!

I am a Splendid Table devotee. That said, I heard Lynne's voice through the book-let. I was a little disappointed that this was one menu with variations. I must have missed that in my excitement. I will try some of the options, but would have liked a bit more.

Love at first word!!!!

I am just recently discovered The Splendid Table, and love the radio program. When the e-newsletter popped up in my email I knew I had to have it. The newsletter reads like sitting on a porch on a Saturday afternoon and having a great conversation with Lynn! She is humorously honest and quite persuasive. I haven't decided which recipe I will try first, but I will be trying them all. Already ready for next issue!

Love the books, not the cost.

I absolutely love these books... I am hooked on the story of Sean and Avery. I'm just starting to resent the fact that I'm paying so much for short novellas, the same price that I tend to pay for most full length novels. When all is said and done, it just feels like readers, like me, are being taken advantage of. But I love the story and think the author deserves the positive feedback nonetheless.

Another great volume!

This series has hooked me and reeled me in. I had this volume read the night I received it and read it a second time before I went to bed. After reading this one, I am counting down the days until the next one is released. I was so caught up in the emotions that I was angry, I laughed, and I cried.

After being dismissed in the last volume, Avery is trying to move on. Luckily she has her friends who care about her and support her anyway they can. Unfotunately moving on is easier said than done especially given her past. Eventually, of course, Sean returns bringing brining all her anger to the surface. Luckily Avery is able to stand up for herself and tell him exactly what she thinks. The letter he wrote her gives me hope that things will work out. We'll just have to wait and see.

I am so glad the author decided to write more volumes to this story. Originally, there were only to be 4-5. There is so much to be told, so much to overcome, I had no idea how she could have wrapped it up so quickly. It is well worth reading, and well worth the wait.

Wow! A Different Kind of Book

Wow! What a great book! This book is different than any I have ever read--and I'm a voracious reader. It's fantasy and, yet, is firmly rooted in reality. Such a realness to these characters, even the nonhuman ones! I loved that the fantasy world was never allowed to overshadow the story and the characters.

This is a different type of fantasy than I've ever read! A different kind of book, one that will live with me forever. The characters are that real.

The main character, Holly Scruggs, who has been beaten down by her mother, is such an inspiration! She never allows herself to fall into self pity.

With the mysterious Theo's help, she discovers her true calling in life and the confidence she needs.

Without a doubt this book just made my top 10 list of favorite books ever. What an amazing gift Melissa Turner Lee has!

I tried to think of a book to compare this to and failed. However, the way The Earth Painter made me feel reminded me of Pride and Prejudice. It evoked feelings of satisfaction, joy, and, yes, love.

You will not want to put it down when you begin to read. When you finish the Kindle version, you'll want to buy the paperback, for the simple reason that when you glance at it on your bookshelf, you'll remember the great pleasure of reading it. And with that glance will come a happy sigh.

And, although all the loose ends are not tied up, happily for the readers, there is a sequel, The Man Painter.

This is the first book in The Painter Series. It is a YA Supernatural Romance, but let me just say, it different than any I have read. I am still in amazement. I couldn't put the book down. I was drawn in from the very beginning.

The story revolves around Holly. She and her parents have just moved back to the town her parents grew up, Chesnee, SC. Her father had lost his job, and they had sold everything they could to make ends meet. Holly's mother has always been one that believe that image was everything, one of the reason why they went broke. No one is to know this of course, that would just ruin everything. Now, Holly has to start a new school in her senior year, make new friends, and if that wasn't hard enough, make sure she doesn't slip and let people know the real reason they moved back. Thanks to a mix up in her schedule, Holly ends up meeting Theo, which pretty much tells her how everything began. And when I say how it all began, that is just what I mean. How the Earth and everything on it was created. Now that Holly knows these secrets, her life, and maybe even her heart, is put in danger.

The author puts a wonderful spin on how the Earth became what and how it is. The author was very descriptive, it was like she was painting every scene. The book is different from all other books I have read in its genre. Even the ending surprised me. It is no fairytale ending in any case. I couldn't put this book down. My guy even stated "That must be some book?" Every spare second, I was reading it. All I can say is WOW! This is a must read. I can't wait to see what happens in the rest of the series.

SPEECHLESS !!! That was the first reaction i had or rather the state i was in after i finished reading this book . Words cannot describe the feeling stirring up in me . If a painter could paint using words instead of colours , then this book would be called a " Masterpiece" and Melissa Turner Lee could be considered the exquisite painter of this fine work of art .

Cover-speak : Honestly , the cover says it all .. No questions asked , it clearly and descriptively gives us an idea as to what a reader can expect from this book . But the surprise bit lies in the intensity of the contents of the book . Totally not cliche , totally unexpected .

The Earth Painter is the story of Holly Scruggs , a girl who constantly lives under the shadows of her parents . What does that mean you ask ? Well , she basically lives her life the way her mother wants her to live giving little or no importance to what she wants or how she wants to live her life . Her likes and dislikes dont matter as long as it suits the lifestyle her parents choose to live . Until the day she meets Theo . Something changes inside Holly the day her life crosses paths with this mysterious yet intriguing stranger in the school's auditorium . What follows is a rollercoaster ride filled with secrets , twists and turns . Theo is'nt just an ordinary guy . He's a painter . And not just any painter , he is the painter of the earth . The guy responsible for painting life on earth .

Things i loved about this book :

1) Not your average fairytale romance : This book is sooo much more than just a guy and a girl meeting and then falling in love . There were so many elements in this book that took me by surprise . Things that i could never think of in the ways its been potrayed in this book . And
mind you , these ar'nt unknown elements . They are very well known and probably stuff's we study in schools and colleges !! * That's a major spoiler , if you can guess what i mean * ..

2) Emphasis on reality : Even though this book is a supernaturally based romance , it had a lot of elements that reflect the different kinds of 'truths' prevalent in the modern society . Abusive relationships , Peer Pressure etc were a major part of the storyline . Also sometimes we look at certain things or objects and wonder , why is it that this has been made this way or what was the purpose of making something the way it is found to be . Well i can definitely say that some of those questions were answered in this book .

3) Originality to the core : This book just beams with originality .Pure and creative imagination takes this book to an entirely new level . As far as my view goes , taking into consideration books that i have read i could safely say that this story is just so full of life and exciting
and completely unheard of . Never ever have i read a book that speaks of earth painters , sculptors and sciences . Hats off to the author and her creativity .

4) Holly and Theo : Holly was definitely a surprise filled character for me . Oflate i've read a lot of books where the main female lead start to get on your nerves with her stupidity and impatience . But not Holly . I really loved reading about her . Never a single moment of
disappointment . The way she is potryaed in the beginning of the story and how she transforms to what she becomes by the end was such a joy to read . And Theo .... I just get all tongue tied when it comes down to him . I soooooo wish i find someone like him someday .Just saying ....
And their romance , that was kinda new too . nNot the hate-love kind of stuff . I loved how their relationship starts off and grows as time and story progresses . An absolute treat :)

5) The beginning of a new story : The way the book ended just left me wanting for more . I really wanted to know what had happened or what had triggered those changes . The author cleverly manages to hold the interest of the reader by throwing in a startling revelation in the end . Thereby creating an enticing stroryline for the sequel . I just cant wait to read it .

Parting thoughts : I was left speechless in the end . Absolutely dumbfound , i was trying to find words to describe the awesomeness that this book was . Something new and fresh , readers will not be disappointed . Recommended for those who love originality and newness , this book is sure to make you wanting more by the end !!! Melissa you are simply superb .

Very helpful.

"Fitzgerald's The Great Gatsby (Cliffs Notes)" is a great way to help you understand what you're reading, if you're having difficulties. If you're not having a problem reading "The Great Gatsby," this will give you questions to test your knowledge of the book. Of course, you should read the Cliffs Notes AFTER you read "The Great Gatsby," not instead of. I recommend.

A good guide

This study guide has excellent summaries and analyses of each chapter, three essays on main characters and background information about the author and the context of the novel. It’s also got some extraneous content, like a Character Map which visualizes the relationships between the characters in a kind of flow chart and two literary essays in the back that don’t add much to what has come before it. Graphics in the margins denoting “Character Insight” and other topics also don’t seem that useful to me, and the copy editing is poorly done with misspelled words including characters’ names on many pages. This study guide does have some unique content. For example, it points to a possible homosexual theme in a scene involving the narrator, and also highlights the warped perception of his perspective after a night of drinking. This study guide has the most thorough chapter summaries and analyses of any guide I’ve read but it’s also stuffed with extraneous content which dilutes the purpose of this type of book.

Relatively good notes for subject

Here is an honest review of the book for what it is, not the ethical and educational implications of reading this book. In terms of the educational value received from the book, it's not too bad. Although their vocabulary isn't as great as the vocabular sparknotes employs, their guides seem to colloquially explain the subject material, which is the purpose of the book. I bought the book because I was at Target and needed a guide for an upcomming test where I wouldn't have internet access the nights before (I usually use sparknotes because it's free), and I was surprised by the writing quality of the book. Granted, it's not as good as Fitzgeral's writing, however it does relate the story, which is the primary purpose for a history class.

Concerning the people who have condemned this book, they need to understand the multiple approaches to learning subject areas. Currently I maintain a schedule where on good days I receive 6 hours of sleep and on bad a receive 3 to none because of my busy schedule and heavy extra-cirricular activity. Reading cliff-notes doesn't mean we as readers won't look in the book for quotes (for example - writing a paper) to support our ideas. Simply condemning them because they're not the real book is unfair to the book, the authors, and the people that use cliff notes for ligitimate purposes. Overall, it conveys the idea well, however sparknotes does an equally decent job.

Things I never knew about the Pilgrim Fathers

Like most people I thought that the Pilgrim Fathers arrived at Plymouth one day, sailed off on the Mayflower the next and (after a few vicissitudes) reached the New World where they established a colony. Right - but also very WRONG. If you want to know the true story behind their trials and tribulations then read this book and experience them with the main character William Bradford. Did you know, for example, that when they arrived, the colonists drew up a contract which they called the "Mayflower Compact" and each man took it in turn to sign? I didn't. I must admit that I am a bit of a history nut and so I enjoyed every authentic detail in the book. However, don't let that comment put you off, the author's research never overwhelms the reader. Once they reach the New World they have starvation, hostile native American (well, you would fight for your land, wouldn't you?)and other settlers to contend with. But their desire for religious freedom more than outweighs personal suffering and and disease. Other reviews have gone into the detail of the book more than I have here. I will just finish by saying that I really enjoyed this novel and at the end of it I understood why Mrs Tildman had chosen the title: ONE SMALL CANDLE. Read it and you will, too.

Their quest for religious freedom to worship and differences in their views from their Catholic counterparts, would set them on a journey in which Tidman brings out the realities in their fight for survival:
-difficult inclement weather abroad ships
-disease and deaths abroad ships
-deaths of mothers and infants during birth
-Godly leadership raised up

Learn of their steadfastness to worship God on the Sabbath, fast and pray, and how God would see them through often right on time. Their endurance and perseverance came with a great cost and leadership would often switch hands due to beliefs and deaths. When you reflect back, perhaps you too, like myself, will come to the understanding that it was more than raw strength and will that would colonize New England and later give birth to a great nation; rather, it was the invisible hand of God that directed wisdom in many ways.

Whatever your perspective is in regards to the Indians, Tidman's research will clarify the early encounters between the Pilgrims and Indians. This is not just a story of a new beginning but the realities of love that wouldn't die and deception that would prove costly.

I will not give it away but you must read this to learn the significance of this title One Small Candle. I recommend this book for teenagers and adults. The drama unfolded will capture your attention while strengthening your historical understanding.

One Small Candle - Lot's of Light

As I have gotten older all I want to read anymore is really well written, believable, historical fiction and it is hard to find. I have also become more interested in American history since researching my own ancestry. Reading Evelyn Tidman's book hit all the marks for me. I did not know what to expect as I got the book via Book Bub for a great price and that can be very hit or miss - One Small Candle was a hit. Tidman's writing style drew me in and made the history come alive. I found out much more than I expected to about what drove the pilgrims to leave their homes and what they encountered when they arrived in the New World. The description of their struggle, bravery, and ability to adapt was really fascinating. I highly recommend this book. a very good read and deserves a much wider audience.

Great patterns, great book

Harry Steeves is one of the best of the modern innovators in fly tying, and this collection of his best patterns, largely terrestrials, and all involving foam in one way or another, is even better than his first book, because the instructions are much clearer. His firefly is one of my favorite patterns. Now, if it were just easier to buy the Kreinek braids he recommends...

I have a rather nice collection of fly tying books and magazines, there's not much of a plot in any of them. Always on the look out for a book to help me when I teach a class, it's nice to find a book that has clear pictures, the patterns are realistic in both appearance and materials required. The dialogue he has makes you smile and can be easily identified with, and there's even recipes for making your catch even better after an enjoyable day out on the water.
The table of contents is the index, to find something specific you'll just have to start looking and reading, which is worth the sit down and enjoy time, just make sure you don't get so involved in the book you lose track of time.
For the beginner it's informative without being wordy, the the intermediate the patterns showcase what else can be done, the use of common materials found in the kitchen or play room starts the tier thinking what else can I use.
Please consider adding this book to your library, especially if you like terrestrials.
