Late April, 1817—the London home of Lady Cicely Hawthorne

'I, for one, am disappointed that you do not seem to be any further along with finding a bride for Hawthorne, Cicely,' Edith St Just, Dowager Duchess of Royston, gave her friend a reproving frown.

'Perhaps we were all being a trifle ambitious, at the start of the Season, in deciding to acquire suitable wives for our three grandsons?' Lady Jocelyn Ambrose put in softly.

The three ladies talking now had been aged only eighteen when they had shared a coming-out Season fifty years ago and had become fast friends, a state of affairs that had seen them all through marriage and their children's marriages. They now had their sights firmly set on the nuptials of their errant grandchildren.

'Nonsense,' the dowager duchess dismissed that claim firmly. 'You had no trouble whatsoever in seeing Chambourne settled—'

'But not to the bride I had chosen for him,' Lady Jocelyn pointed out fairly.

'Nevertheless, he is to marry,' the dowager duchess dismissed airily. 'And if we do not see to the marriage of our respective grandsons, then who will? My own daughter-in-law is of absolutely no help whatsoever in that enterprise, since she retired to the country following my son Robert's demise three years ago. And Royston certainly shows no inclination himself to give up his habit of acquiring a mistress for several weeks before swiftly growing bored with her and moving on to the next.' She gave loud sniff.

Miss Eleanor Rosewood—Ellie—step-niece and companion to the dowager duchess, glanced across from where she sat quietly by the window with the two companions of Lady Cicely and Lady Jocelyn, knowing that sniff only too well: it conveyed the dowager duchess's disapproval on every occasion.

But Ellie could not help but feel a certain amount of sympathy towards Lady Cicely's dilemma; Lord Adam Hawthorne was known by all, including the numerous servants employed on his many estates, for being both cold and haughty, as well as totally unapproachable.

So much so that it must be far from easy for Lady Cicely to even broach the subject of her grandson remarrying, despite his first marriage having only produced a daughter and no heir, let alone finding a woman who was agreeable to becoming the second wife of such an icily sarcastic gentleman.

Oh, it would have its compensations, no doubt; his lordship was a wealthy gentleman—very wealthy in-deed—and more handsome than any single gentleman had a right to be, with glossy black hair and eyes of deep impenetrable grey set in a hard and arrogantly aristocratic face, his shoulders and chest muscled, waist tapered, legs long and strong.

Unfortunately, his character was also icy enough to chill the blood in any woman's veins, hence the reason he was known amongst the ton as simply Thorne!

Hawthorne's cold nature aside, Ellie was far more interested in the dowager duchess's efforts to find a bride for her own grandson, Justin St Just, Duke of Royston…

'Adam is proving most unhelpful, I am afraid.' Lady Cicely sighed. 'He has refused each and every one of my invitations for him to dine here with me one evening.'

The dowager duchess raised iron-grey brows. 'On what basis?'

Lady Cicely grimaced. 'He claims he is too busy…'

Edith St Just snorted. 'The man has to eat like other mortals, does he not?'

'One would presume so, yes…' Lady Cicely gave another sigh.

'Well, you must not give up trying, Cicely,' the dowager duchess advised most strongly. 'If Hawthorne will not come to you, then you must go to him.'

Lady Cicely looked alarmed. 'Go to him?'

'Call upon him at Hawthorne House.' The dowager duchess urged. 'And insist that he join you here for dinner that same evening.'

'I will try, Edith.' Lady Cicely looked far from convinced of her likely success. 'But do tell us, how goes your own efforts in regard to Royston's future bride? Well, I hope?' She brightened. 'Let us not forget that a week ago you wrote that lady's name down on a piece of paper and gave it to Jocelyn's butler for safekeeping!'

The dowager duchess gave a haughty inclination of her head. 'And, as you will see, that is the young lady he will marry, when the time comes.'

'I do so envy you, when I have to deal with Adam's complete lack of co-operation in that regard…' Lady Cicely looked totally miserable.

'Hawthorne will come around, you will see.' Lady Jocelyn gave her friend's hand a reassuring squeeze.

Ellie, easily recalling the forbidding countenance of the man, remained as unconvinced of that as did the poor, obviously beleaguered Lady Cicely.

'Oh, do let's talk of other things!' Lady Jocelyn encouraged brightly. 'For instance, have either of you heard the latest rumour concerning the Duke of Sheffield's missing granddaughter?'

'Oh, do tell!' Lady Cicely encouraged avidly.

Ellie added her own, silent, urging to Lady Cicely's; the tale of the missing granddaughter of the recently deceased Duke of Sheffield had been the talk both below and above stairs for most of the Season, the duke having died very suddenly two months ago, to be succeeded by his nephew. The previous duke's granddaughter and ward had disappeared on the day following his funeral, at the same time as the Sheffield family jewels and several thousand pounds had also gone missing.

'I try never to listen to idle gossip.' The dowager duchess gave another of her famous sniffs.

'Oh, but this is not in the least idle, Edith,' Lady Jocelyn assured. 'Miss Matthews has been seen on the Continent, in the company of a gentleman, and living a life of luxury. Further igniting the rumour that she may have had something to do with the Duke's untimely death, as well as the theft of the Sheffield jewels and money.'

'I cannot believe that any granddaughter of Jane Matthews would ever behave so reprehensively,' Edith St Just stated firmly.

'But the gel's mother was Spanish, remember.' Lady Cicely gave her two friends a pointed glance.

'Hmm, there is that to consider, Edith.' Lady Jocelyn mused.

'Stuff and nonsense,' the dowager duchess dismissed briskly. 'Maria Matthews was the daughter of a grandee and I refuse to believe her daughter guilty of anything unless proven otherwise.'

Which, as Ellie knew only too well, was now the end of that particular subject.

Although she knew that many in society, and below stairs, speculated as to why, if she truly were innocent, Miss Magdelena Matthews had disappeared, along with the Sheffield jewels and money, the day of her grandfather's funeral.

One day later—Hawthorne House, Mayfair, London

Do not scowl so, Adam, else I will think you are not at all pleased to see me!'

That displeasure glinted in Lord Hawthorne's narrowed grey eyes and showed in his harshly patrician face, as he heard the rebuke in his grandmother's quiet tone. Nor was she wrong about his current displeasure being caused by her unexpected arrival; he had neither the time nor the patience for the twittering of Lady Cicely this afternoon. Or any afternoon, come to that! 'I am only surprised you are visiting me now, Grandmother, when I know you are fully aware this is the time of day that I retire to the nursery in order to spend half an hour with Amanda.'

His grandmother arched silver brows beneath her pale-green bonnet as the two faced each across the blue salon of Adam's Mayfair home. 'And may I not also wish to visit with my great-granddaughter?'

'Well, yes, of course you may.' Adam belatedly strode across the room to bestow a kiss upon one of his grandmother's powdered cheeks. 'It is only that I would have appreciated prior notice of your visit.'

'Why?'

He scowled darkly. 'My time is at a premium, Grandmother, nor do I care to have my routine interrupted.'

'And I have just stated that I have no wish to interrupt anything,' she reminded him quietly.

'Nevertheless, you are—' Adam broke off his impatient outburst, aware that his grandmother's unexpected arrival had already made him four minutes late arriving at the nursery. 'Well, you are here now, so by all means accompany me, if you wish to.' He nodded abruptly as he wrenched open the salon door—much to Barnes's surprise, as the butler stood attentively on the other side of that door—for his grandmother to precede him from the room.

'You really are the most impatient of men, Adam.' Lady Cicely swept past him into the grand hallway, indicating with a nod that her paid companion should wait there for her return. 'I do not believe even your grandfather and father were ever as irritable as you.'

Adam placed a gentlemanly hand beneath his grandmother's elbow as he escorted her up the wide staircase, in the full knowledge that Lady Cicely's overly fussy nature—to put it kindly!—had irked his grandfather and father as much, if not more, as it now did him. Nevertheless, his grandfather and father were no longer with them, leaving Lady Cicely alone in the world but for himself and Amanda, and so it fell to Adam, as the patriarch of the family, to at least attempt kindness towards his elderly relative. 'I apologise if my abruptness of manner has offended you,' he said.

His grandmother released her elbow from his grasp to instead tuck her hand more cosily into the crook of his arm. 'Perhaps as recompense you might consider dining with me this evening.?'

Adam stiffened as he easily recognised Lady Cicely's less-than-subtle attempt at coercion; he hesitated to call it actual blackmail, although he could not help but be aware of his grandmother's recent attempts to introduce him to suitably marriageable ladies—suitable according to Lady Cicely, that was. Adam was having none of it. The ladies. Or the marriage. 'I have to attend a vote in the House tonight, Grandmother.' After which he fully intended to retire to his club for the rest of the evening, where he hoped to enjoy a few quiet games of cards and several glasses of fine brandy.

'Then perhaps tomorrow evening?' Lady Cicely pressed. 'It is so long since the two of us spent any time together.'

Deliberately so, on Adam's part, since he had realised what his grandmother was about. He had absolutely no interest in marrying again and his life really was now such that he had little time for anything other than his responsibilities to the House of Lords and his many estates. The dinners and balls, and all the other nonsense of the Season, held no interest for him whatsoever.

'We are together now, Grandmother,' he pointed out practically.

'But not in any way that—never mind.' Lady Cicely sighed her impatience. 'It is obvious to me that you have become even more intransigent than you ever were!'

Adam's mouth tightened at the criticism. Well-deserved criticism. But his grandmother knew the reason for his intransigence as well as he did; having been married for over two years, and so been dragged along as his adulterous wife's escort to every ball, dinner, and other society function during the Season, and to summer house parties when it was not, Adam now chose, as a widower these past four years, not to attend any of them. There was no reason for him to do so. Most, if not all, of society bored him, so why would he ever choose to voluntarily put himself through those days and evenings of irritation and boredom?

Even so, he instantly felt a guilty need to make amends for the tears he now saw glistening in his grandmother's faded grey eyes. 'I may be able to spare an hour or two to join you for dinner tomorrow evening—'

'Oh, that is wonderful, Adam!' His grandmother's tears disappeared as if they had never been as she now beamed up at him. 'I shall make sure to serve all of your favourite dishes.'

'I said an hour or two, Grandmother,' Adam repeated sternly.

'Yes, yes,' she acknowledged distractedly, obviously already mentally planning her menu for tomorrow evening. And her guest list. Some of which would no doubt be several of those eligible females Adam wished to avoid! 'How is the new girl working out?'

'New girl?' Adam's mind had gone a complete blank at this sudden change of subject, not altogether sure he understood the meaning of his grandmother's question; surely Lady Cicely could not be referring to the woman he had briefly taken an interest in the previous month, before deciding that she bored him in bed as well as out of it?

'Amanda's nursemaid.' Lady Cicely clarified.

Adam's brow cleared at this explanation. 'Mrs Leighton is not a girl, Grandmother. Nor is she Amanda's nursemaid, but her governess.'

'Is Amanda not a little young as yet for a governess? Especially when you know as well as I that society does not appreciate a blue-stocking—'

'I will not have Amanda growing up to be an ignoramus, with nothing in her head other than balls and parties and the latest fashions.' Like her mother before her, Adam could have stated, but chose not to do so; the less thought he gave to Fanny, and her adulterous ways, the better as far as he was concerned!

'—and you never did explain fully why it was that you felt the need to dispense with Dorkins's services after all these years?'

Lady Cicely was slightly out of breath as they ascended the stairs to the third floor of the house where the nursery was situated.

Nor did Adam intend explaining himself now. Having the nursemaid of his six-year-old daughter make it obvious to him that she was available to share his bed, if he so wished, had not only been unpleasant but beyond acceptable. Especially as he had never, by word or deed, ever expressed a carnal interest in the pretty but overly plump Clara Dorkins.

Now, if it had been Elena Leighton, Amanda's new governess, then he might not have found the notion of sharing her bed for a night or two quite so unpalatable—

And where, pray, had that particular thought come from?

Since the death of his wife Adam had kept the satisfying of his carnal desires to a minimum, considering them a weakness he could ill afford. And, whenever those desires did become too demanding, even for his now legendary self-control, he only ever indulged with those ladies of the demi-monde whose company he considered he could stand for longer than an hour, possibly two. Less-than-respectable ladies, who expected nothing more than to be handsomely paid for the parting of their thighs.

Adam had certainly never so much as thought of forming an alliance with one of his own employees, hence his hasty dismissal of Clara Dorkins two weeks ago.

Don't say you haven't been warned
By Sandy Milan
I bought this book as I've pre-ordered the last in the trilogy, which sounded quite intriguing and I've enjoyed some of this author's work but most especially her Daring Duchess series. Sadly I missed a few vague comments in other reviews, which if I'd paid attention to, would've stopped me buying and putting myself through this book. I'll mention some of them in my spoilers. I'm not a fan of one of the main themes in this book and it usually prevents me enjoying the story, not matter how I try. Added to that the H is thoroughly unpleasant for such a major part of the story that I wasn't given enough time to come around. By 70% he was still an incredible ass as well as being terribly cruel and although we, the readers were privy to some of his thoughts towards her, he was still being an ass 80% of the way in.

+++Spoilers+++
The h was raped by her evil cousin 2 months before the start of this book and I fail to believe that the h would've responded so quickly to the H in a sexual way. The theme I most hate is the one where the H wants to make the h his mistress despite the wonderful care she is giving his needy daughter. He knows that he needs to put his daughter first and that for the first time she is happy with a governess. Already his character is determined by his selfishness and he's no ideal father to begin with. He treated the h awfully from the start, was incredibly cruel to her after the first time they 'dallied', he immediately believed she was a murderess when he heard who she was. There was no romance only lust as far as I could tell. What on earth she saw in him, besides the fact that he was gorgeous, I'll never know. By the time he redeemed himself it was way too late for me and I certainly didn't believe they could be in love with each other since there was no evidence of that.

Nice, but Nothing Special
By Reading Fanatic
I really enjoyed this book by Carole Mortimer. It is the second book in her A Season of Secrets series. The first book is actually a short story, being only 44 pages long. The essence of the series is that three grandmothers, all leading hostesses in the ton and longtime friends, want to get their grandsons married off. Each book in the series is one of their grandsons' story.

The plot of this book, while a popular one in historical romances, was very nicely handled by Ms. Mortimer. Elena is a runaway granddaughter of a recently deceased Duke. Her evil cousin, Neville, now the current Duke and her guardian, accused Elena of murdering their grandfather and stealing from the family after she declines his offer of marriage and rebuffs his advances. The night of their grandfather's funeral, Neville attacks Elena causing her to flee the family home. Elena is now in hiding under an assumed name, working as a governess in Adam's household.

Adam does not participate in society after having endured a disastrous marriage with a selfish, petulant, beauty who cheated on him quite openly during the course of their marriage. Needless to say, Adam is now suspicious of women in general and has no use for them other than to satisfy his base needs, and even that only occasionally. Consequently, in general he is withdrawn, cold, and haughty towards everyone, including his 6 year old daughter, to a degree. Elena is very beautiful and Adam is drawn to her....the typical lord/governess plot.

During the time that Elena works for Adam their relationship develops. While deeply attracted to Elena, Adam is also suspicious that Elena is not all she appears to be. She is too outspoken and very often does not behave in the typical submissive manner of a governess! In particular, Elena is often critical of Adam's less than affectionate behavior towards his daughter and endeavors to help foster a more caring relationship between the two. In truth, Adam loves his daughter very much, but has difficulty expressing that love. With Elena's help, a more relaxed, loving relationship between Adam and his daughter begins to develop....again typical of the lord/governess plot.

Eventually, Adam discovers Elena's true identify. He then takes steps to help clear her name. I read where another reviewer said Adam was quite mean towards Elena. That is true, however, Adam felt he had to withdraw himself from Elena during the time he was attempting to prove her innocence. He did not want to be accused of having a personal interest in helping her. Consequently, he said mean, untrue things to Elena in an attempt to keep her away from himself. The author made it quite clear that at the time he was saying such things to Elena, Adam had to fight his natural inclination to comfort her. The ending was quite neatly wrapped up and eventually Adam and Elena got their HEA.

I really enjoyed reading this book. It was a really sweet romance with some twist and turns. I wouldn't call this a "clean" romance as there is one fairly graphic sex scene between Adam and Elena, though not overly so. I gave this book 3 stars because although entertaining there was nothing earth shattering about it and the plot was quite predictable.

Furthermore, I think it could do with some extensive editing. On several occasions I found it necessary to re-read sentences because they were overly long and confusing. It seems Ms. Mortimer has a particular fondness for dashes and, IMHO, uses them where a period and a new sentence would have worked better. Overall a nice read. I look forward to the next book in the series...."Not Just A Wallflower." BTW I borrowed this book from the LA Public Library's Digital Library.

Good But Not Great
By Lovemuffins
Okay, so the reader knows very quickly that Mrs. Elena Leighton is not who she says she is... in fact she's a granddaughter of a Duke but she's also a fugitive on the run as she's been accused of killing said Duke. We also quickly discover that her reasons for being accused have to do with her awful cousin who forced himself on her.

Yet she feels perfectly safe around Lord Adam Hawthorne even though he's known as one of the coldest men in Society. He earns the title as well during the book, more than once, because he has a tendency to see things in black and white (as well as be a bit of a drama-queen) when truths start coming out.

On the other hand, he's also pretty sexy, he wants to be a good father and it's not entirely his fault that he has trouble relating to people. Oh, and he's a pushover for his grandmother and who doesn't think that's cute? To balance that out is the brooding, the angry outbursts and the whole black and white with no shades of grey thing. Elena is fun because she's pushy, sweet, and refuses to be a victim. Unfortunately that makes it even harder to like Adam when he's being mean to her. Especially because sometimes he gets a little too mean.

The reason this didn't get five stars from me was because the wrap-up was a little too convenient when it came to the whole false accusation thing... convenient and so super easy that it kinda reminded me of Twilight with how the tension builds and builds and builds... and then nothing happens. Everything is conveniently and quickly fixed with just a conversation! (Oh Twilight... you slay me). Anyway.

Easy and fairly enjoyable, a little cliche but done in an entertaining enough manner to be engaging.

While it is not a great work, even of its kind
By Oliver D. O'bryan
This is the first book by Tom Clancy I've read. While it is not a great work, even of its kind, I found it very interesting, with a mixture of fantasy and reality. There's a good deal of interesting and accurate detail. Very entertaining on the whole. True there's a lot of John Wayne mentality in Clancy's apparent beliefs about the system and America per se, but that's to be expected.

By Manfred Finkhaeuser

The Temptation of Lila and Ethan (The Secret series Book 3), by Jessica Sorensen

From the #1 New York Times bestselling author of the Ella and Micha series comes a gripping story of passion, pain, and the courage to love . . .

THE TEMPTATION OF LILA AND ETHAN

On the surface, Lila Summers is flawless: good looks, expensive clothes, and a big, beautiful smile. But a dark past and even darker secrets are threatening to bubble over her perfect façade. She'll do anything to keep the emptiness inside hidden-which leads her into situations that always end badly. Whenever she hits bottom, there's only one person who's there to pull her out: Ethan Gregory.

Ethan set the rules a long time ago: he and Lila are just friends. He doesn't do relationships. Although his tattooed, bad boy exterior is a far cry from Lila's pretty princess image, Ethan can't deny they have a deeper connection than he's used to. If he's not careful, he could be in serious danger of becoming attached-and he's learned the hard way that attachment only leads to heartbreak.

When Lila falls farther than she ever has before, can Ethan continue to help as a friend? Or is he also getting close to falling . . . for her?

Another Great read by Jessica Sorensen!
By Delphina
I am that reader that was cheering on Lila and Ethan since they were first introduced in The Secret of Ella and Micha. At the time, they were just the two best friends of Ella and Micha and were from different worlds. You could just see that there was more to their blossoming friendship then friendship. I was so beyond geeked when I heard they were getting their own story. What a story it was!
Once again, Jessica has written a deeply moving story about characters that are more then they first appear. Both Lila and Ethan have grown up in less then ideal circumstances and each of them dealt with it in very different ways. Watching them grow to trust each other and watching their past unfold as their story was shared made this book unputtdownable for me. While I really think I enjoyed this story more because I had "known" them for a few books, this could easily be a stand alone read. Unlike some of Jessica's books, this does not end in an evil cliffhanger, so no worries there. It does have a a slight cliffhanger if you read past the story, but if you have will power and do not read the sneak, all should be good :).

Just didn't feel it
By Yadira Hernandez
In Ella and Micha's first book, and even in the second, the author did a good job about making me want to read more about what was going on between Lila and Ethan. She dropped hints making us think there might be something going on between them, the chemistry was there and I was really looking forward to reading their book and seeing more of their story unfold. But then the book came out and I just felt like something was missing. That spark that captures you and connects you to the characters wasn't there. I feel that most of her books have the same sad background that set up the story-line, I would have liked it if she would have taken a different direction with this book. If you don't want spoilers... STOP READING HERE!!!..... Lila was raped, lets call it what it is. A 14 year old cannot make a reasonable conscious decision to have sex with a 22 year old. And how this creep was never arrested or faced any repercussions after what he did, is beyond me. No matter how screwed up a parent is, I don't believe for one minute that they wouldn't want to protect their child. This was one of the factors that made this book not so believable. Lila's promiscuous behavior or her drug abuse problem were never addressed or at least hinted, so when I read it, it was hard for me to really connect with her or feel sorry for her. Another factor was the connection between Ethan and London, no one knew about her. There were no hints of her in the first two books and if Ethan and Micha where such good friends, how was it that it said in the book that no one knew about her? I felt a little more connected to his character and I understand needing to let go of an old love before moving forward in life.

There were a few things that irked me while reading this book. One of them was the editing. When an author trusts their work to an editor one would expect to see a few errors here and there, but there were a few that were so obvious that I have no idea how they were missed. Especially if it was submitted for a few run-throughs. There were also a few slip ups that the Author had that just took away from the integrity of the book. If you don't mind a few slip ups and reading about really screwed up parenting then its an okay read.

The temptation of Lila and Ethan
By Jessica Sorensen

4.5 out of 5 Stars

I love Jessica's work. Each read gets better and better. In this one, we get to know Lila and Ethan's story along with their relationship with Ella and Micha. At times I must admit it was tuff and heart breaking to read especially when we learn what happened in Lila's past but it allows us to understand why she acts the way she does when it comes to men and sex. The whole history of the way she was raise, or lack of, by her so called parent will have you shaking your head. Lila is not the only one with a dark past, Ethan also grow up with an abusive family. Having a violent dad, he found it hard to believe in true love. He also had a relationship that was superficial and revolved around drugs until a tragic incident to awake him and get clean and vow that he would never get evolved in another serious relationship to avoid hurt to himself and someone else. Can theses two friends find more with their relationship and help each other find true love? Will Lila be able to realize that what happened to her wasn't her fault. That there is more to feeling love rather then numbing herself so she doesn't have to remember her past? Will Ethan let Lila into his life without the fear of becoming his father and let go of the guilt in his first relationship? This is a must read!

Maybe a Fox, by Kathi Appelt, Alison McGhee

Worlds collide in a spectacular way when Newbery and National Book Award finalist Kathi Appelt and Pulitzer Prize nominee and #1 New York Times bestseller Alison McGhee team up to create a fantastical, heartbreaking, and gorgeous tale about two sisters, a fox cub, and what happens when one of the sisters disappears forever.

Sylvie and Jules, Jules and Sylvie. Better than just sisters, better than best friends, they’d be identical twins if only they’d been born in the same year. And if only Sylvie wasn’t such a fast—faster than fast—runner. But Sylvie is too fast, and when she runs to the river they’re not supposed to go anywhere near to throw a wish rock just before the school bus comes on a snowy morning, she runs so fast that no one sees what happens…and no one ever sees her again. Jules is devastated, but she refuses to believe what all the others believe, that—like their mother—her sister is gone forever.

At the very same time, in the shadow world, a shadow fox is born—half of the spirit world, half of the animal world. She too is fast—faster than fast—and she senses danger. She’s too young to know exactly what she senses, but she knows something is very wrong. And when Jules believes one last wish rock for Sylvie needs to be thrown into the river, the human and shadow worlds collide.

Writing in alternate voices—one Jules’s, the other the fox’s—Kathi Appelt and Alison McGhee tell the searingly beautiful tale of one small family’s moment of heartbreak, a moment that unfolds into one that is epic, mythic, shimmering, and most of all, hopeful.

The Collaborative process behind Maybe a Fox by Alison McGhee and Kathi Appelt The Table Between the pillars, a place where the authors cooked up ideas together, at Vermont College of Fine Arts.

Click here for a larger image

The collaboration that would become Maybe a Fox began many years ago in a freezing and dingy dorm at Vermont College of Fine Arts, where we were new both to the faculty and to each other. Alison’s roller bag had gone missing at the airport, and she remembers Kathi tilting her head in sympathy and offering, in that beautiful Texas accent of hers, to lend her a pair of pajamas. Kathi doesn’t remember that, but she does remember breakfast the next day, when the two of us loaded up our trays and scuttled to sit together at a small table between two huge pillars in the drafty dining hall, a table we sat at every day, three times a day, for each of the residencies we shared.

It was friend-love at first sight, and it was that very first week, when we were eating one of the many meals we ate together Between the Pillars, that Kathi suggested we write a book together.

“What kind of book?” Alison said.

“A book about two sisters,” Kathi answered.

Both of us had many other projects that occupied us, and the idea was tabled, although one of us would occasionally bring it up over the years. Then, about five years ago, Alison sent out a poem about a small red fox in snow as her Poem of the Week. Something about that little fox ignited both of us, and we decided to take the plunge and begin our book.

The ground rules:

  • The book would be about two sisters who were somehow separated, and it would also contain a small red fox.
  • Each of us would take on a new challenge in the writing, something she’d never done before as a writer.
  • We would each write in a separate viewpoint, with chapters alternating between those viewpoints.

After considering the sister possibilities—twins separated at birth? Sisters, each living with one parent? One sister in prison and the other not? One sister alive and the other not?—we left it vague. Sisters, separated somehow. We figured the fox would appear on its own terms, when the time was right, so we didn’t worry about that. As for the personal writing challenge, Kathi decided to write in first person, since she hadn’t before, and Alison decided to write in the voice of the fox, since up until then she’d stayed strictly with humans.

We began the book by trading chapters weekly, sometimes more often if the muse struck. We worked wildly fast, most of the time, and the story gathered ground and impetus week by week.

Eventually we realized that we were writing a book about maybes, about the way we as human beings try to answer unanswerable questions: What happens when we die? What happens with grief too big to stand? What happens when you can’t find the answers to what you most need to know? And that sense, of both possibility and heartbroken wonder, became the core of the novel.

At one point early on, Kathi flew up from Texas, and we sat on Alison’s porch in Minneapolis and took turns reading chapters out loud to each other, pencils in hands, marking up places to revise. We laughed. We cried. We talked through every aspect of plot and character. We never once, strangely enough, argued. Kathi flew back to Texas and the rewrites continued for another three years. At some point along the way we began sending each other fox totems: a fox necklace, a framed fox photograph, a felt basket with a fox on it, fox notecards. Alison now sees foxes wherever she goes; like the characters in Maybe a Fox, she considers them good luck.

Maybe a Fox is so much a part of our hearts and souls at this point that we privately admit to each other we have no idea if it’s any good or not; it just is. We do know that we still, each of us, cry when we read the ending. Just like Jules and Sylvie in Maybe a Fox, we consider ourselves sisters. Sister Kathi, Sister Alison. Our book is made out of wonder and longing and struggle and love. We hope it finds a good place in the world.

From School Library Journal
Gr 4–6—Eleven-year-old Jules and her 12-year-old sister Sylvie are very close and dependent on each other, especially since their mother died when they were very young. So when Sylvie suddenly disappears and is presumed dead, Jules and her father are left to cope with her absence and their lives "after Sylvie." At the moment of Sylvie's death, an unborn fox receives her spirit and is born a "kennen," an animal who has been sent to help a human. In alternating chapters—Jules's point of view written by Appelt and Senna the fox's by McGhee—seemingly unrelated pieces of the plot, such as Jules's fascination with rocks, her neighbor Elk's grief over the loss of his best friend, and Sylvie's need to run faster, are woven together against a magnificent background of forest and river. This is a book of maybes, of what might be, of possible sightings of rare animals, of mysticism and dreams of what might have been. Although there is an underlying tone of tragedy, McGhee reads with great gentleness and warmth, enfolding listeners in the sadness, anger, hope, and strength of the characters. The result is a thought-provoking and moving book that captivates and tugs at the heartstrings. VERDICT Highly recommended for intermediate and middle school collections. Kathi Appelt and Alison McGhee’s collaborative novel entwines the story of one girl’s grief with that of a fox with a rare, but important destiny. Among Jules and Sylvie Sherman’s dad’s Do Not rules is that they are never to go near the Slip, a dangerous point where the Whippoorwill River surges beneath the ground before reemerging downstream. However, this wild, watery place in the woods behind their Vermont home holds a particular allure: it is the perfect place to throw wish rocks. Jules, 11, is a rock hound who loves sorting her collection into “Sherman Galaxies” of igneous, metamorphic, and sedimentary rock, but wish rocks are a category unto
themselves. These rocks are for writing a burning wish that might just come true when cast into the Slip. Sylvie, 12, is a runner whose burning wish is to run faster; but one morning when she doesn’t return from a last-minute dash to the Slip, Jules can only find a tree root poking out of the path, followed by a gash in the snow that ends at the river. And just like that, Sylvie is gone forever.

Elsewhere in the forest, a fox gives birth to three kits and knows that her little girl, Senna, is Kennen—spiritually connected to another living creature. As Senna grows and learns “a thousand years of fox knowledge” from the smells and sounds around her, Jules and her father struggle to cope with Sylvie’s death, their grief compounded by the lingering loss of the girls’ mother a few years earlier. Jules runs through what-if and if-only scenarios that would have kept her sister alive, alternately feeling despair and anger over what has transpired. Her inability to control her emotions rings true, and readers will empathize with her desire to find her feet in a world “After Sylvie.”

Despite the heavy nature of the story, it maintains a forward momentum and resists taking on a brooding atmosphere. This is due in part to the way the narrative shifts, drawing on different characters’ experiences with death. The girls’ friend Sam had a burning wish for his brother, Elk, to return safely from Afghanistan; though he did, Elk’s best friend did not, and Jules and Elk form a quiet camaraderie in their search for solace. Rules and rituals evolve to remember departed loved ones, create order, and stay safe:
Jules sorts her rocks, her dad devises more Do Nots.

Throughout, Jules chases the question, “Where do you go when you die?” It's a query she and Sylvie used to answer with the Maybe game, postulating “Maybe you fly away like a bluebird” or maybe you simply shrink until no one can see you. Once Sylvie dies, this question is joined by another: why did Sylvie want to run so fast? Jules’ sister had always kept this a secret, but both answers, as it turns out, are wrapped up in Senna.

Many readers will quickly guess the connection between Senna, Sylvie, and Jules, but the exact implications to the plot are not as easily discerned. Additionally, the concept of Kennen imparts another avenue for the authors to explore grief, offering a comforting spiritual explanation that is not tied to religion. While this may not resonate with everyone, the fantasy element inherent to Senna’s story helps keep the book’s serious aspects from overwhelming young readers.

Neither author is a stranger to writing poignant animal stories that tackle weighty themes, as Appelt proved in her Newbery Honor book, The Underneath (2008), and McGhee showed in Firefly Hollow (2015). Together, they create a delicate world that effortlessly impresses itself upon the reader. It is a world where bad things can happen for no good reason, where catching sight of a fox means luck, where love transcends all boundaries, and maybe death doesn’t have to be an ending. (Booklist *STARRED* December 15, 2015)

Appelt(The True Blue Scouts of Sugar Man Swamp) and McGhee (Firefly Hollow) create anintoxicating blend of realism and myth in a novel involving a grieving child, ancient legends, and a mysterious fox. When Sylvie, whose burning wish is torun faster than she has ever run, disappears into a Vermont forest and isassumed dead, Jules, her younger sister, feels a sorrow like no other. Just asanguished are Jules’s father and their neighbor Elk, a veteran who knows whatit’s like to lose a loved one. Then there is the fox, who seems to beckon11-year-old Jules into the same Vermont woods. Breaking her father’s rule tonever leave their property, Jules embarks on a quest both dangerous andmarvelous. Evocative third-person narration brings the wonders of the wildernessto life and underscores the mysterious connections between humans, nature, anddestiny. Appelt and McGhee offer just enough clues to keep readers absorbedwhile delving into the powerful emotions of two inexplicably connectedcreatures. Ages 10–14. (Publishers Weekly *STARRED REVIEW* December 14, 2015)

Eleven-year-old Jules, a budding geologist, and hertwelve-year-old sister Sylvie, the fastest kid in school, live withtheir father in rural Vermont. Because the girls’ mother died when Juleswas small, her memories, frustratingly, are dim. She does remember theawful sight of their mother collapsing onto the kitchen floor, and thensix-year-old Sylvie sprinting as fast as she could to get help, but it was toolate. And now Sylvie is the one who has disappeared: one morning before schoolshe takes off running in the woods and never comes back; they think she trippedinto the river and was swept away. At the same time, a fox kit, Senna, is born, with the instinctual desire to watch over and protect Jules. Because foxes areconsidered good luck, Jules’s occasional glimpses of Senna bring her some peace.A catamount, too, is rumored to be in the woods, along with a bear, and atbook’s climax, the human, animal, and (most affectingly) spirit worldscollide and converge. This is a remarkably sad story that offers upmeasures of comfort through nature, family, community, and theinterconnectedness among them. The sisters’ best friend, Sam, who ishimself grieving for Sylvie and desperately longs to see that catamount,is happy to have his brother Elk home from Afghanistan, but Elk’s ownbest friend Zeke didn’t return, leaving Elk bereft; he and Jules mourn theirlosses in the woods. Zeke’s grandmother is the one to whom Sylvie ran whentheir mother collapsed and who now brings soup for Jules, and for her kind, stoic, heartbroken father. A good cry can be cathartic, and this bookabout nourishing one’s soul during times of great sadness does the trick. (The Horn Book Magazine January/February 2016)

Twelve-year-old Sylvie, the older of the two Sherman sisters, is the runner, the fast, impetuous one. A year younger, Jules is a rock collector who takes her time to think things through. The morning of the last snowfall of the season in rural Vermont, Jules and Sylvie build a miniature snow family before getting ready for school. Sylvie wants to be fast, “so fast that…” but she never finishes that sentence, and Jules isn’t sure why her sister is so focused on speed. After playing in the snow, Sylvie darts off into the woods to throw a wishing rock into the Slip—and that’s the last time anyone sees her. At that moment, a fox kit is born. One of a litter of three, this kit is a “kennen,” a being that has an understanding that others do not possess and a destiny that it cannot escape. It’s tied to Jules and to Sylvie. Although Sylvie’s body is not found, everyone knows she drowned in the river and is gone. Jules thinks of it as “the After Sylvie” time, and she and her father grieve together, struggling to cobble together some hope for the future. There are some heavy elements in this beautifully written middle grade novel: the death of Sylvie and Jules’s mother several years before the story begins, the devastating disappearance/death of Sylvie, and the grieving of a neighbor who was deployed with his best friend to Afghanistan. But despite these sad events, the descriptions of rural Vermont, the sense of caring within Jules’s community, and the relationship between the two girls and their father make for a book that is both raw and hopeful and one that readers won’t soon forget. Through a dual narrative—one from Jules, the other from the “kennen” fox kit—the authors convey an understanding that grief is a journey and that a person can, even after terrible loss, feel the warm sun, smile once again, and make wishes for the future. VERDICT-Highly recommended for all middle grade collections.–Kathy Kirchoefer, Henderson County Public Library, NC (School Library Journal *STARRED* January 1, 2016)

A fox kit born with adeep spiritual connection to a human story in a rural Vermont community has aspecial bond with 11-year-old Jules. Jules' sister, Sylvie, just a year older, longs for their mother, who died suddenly. Sylvie is a runner, while Jules'focus is on the intricacies of rocks and stone. When, in the opening chapters, impulsive Sylvie makes a dash to throw a wishing rock into the Slip, atreacherous place where the river drops under the ground, it is Jules whodiscovers that Sylvie tripped on a tree root, sliding in March snow to herdeath. Meanwhile, Jules' kind friend Sam longs to see a live catamount, a rareeastern cougar—and aches for his war-veteran brother, who mourns Zeke, whodidn't return from Afghanistan. Jules and Sylvie's speculative question gameasks what happens after death: "Maybe you turn into wind. / Maybe you turninto stars." Magical elements—a legend about brothers who chanced the Slipfor a girl's love; an elusive grotto; spirit animals sent to complete a taskunfinished for a human—all confer transcendent dimensions on the story. Appeltand McGhee's rich, polished narrative invites the reader to experience theworld both as Jules and as the fox. Intriguing as a story of connection to theanimal world and, for perceptive readers, filled with solace. (Fantasy. 9-13) (Kirkus Reviews December 15, 2015)

Eleven-year-oldJules and her older sister, Sylvie, know that the Slip, the dangerous placewhere the river near their house flows into a deep cavern, has been declaredoff limits by their father; the warning, however, has often gone unheeded asthe two girls go there to throw “wish” stones. One morning Sylvie leaves Julesbehind and runs to the Slip to make a quick wish, and she doesn’t return.Jules’ time is then separated into Before Sylvie and After Sylvie as shegrieves for her sister and tries to hold off the guilt she feels about Sylvie’sdeath. As Jules wanders, lost, through her days, she often catches sight of ared fox that she feels a connection to; in fact, the fox is a Kennen, a spiritmeant to help humans. The book keenly conveys Jules’ pain at the loss of Sylvieand realistically complements it with absolute fury at her sister’s actions. The chapters that focus on the fox are warmly narrated, and the fox itself isgently curious and then genuinely empathetic toward Jules. A subplot involvingthe return of the older brother of Jules best friend from Afghanistan showsthat grief manifests in many ways, a message that is underlined by the howl ofthe fox’s family after she sacrifices herself for Jules. This is a quietexploration of what it is to continue life after the death of a loved one. (Bulletin of the Center for Children's Books February 2016)

Father says eleven-year-old Jules is as strong as a rock, but Jules doesn’t feel as strong as her sister, Sylvie, who can run like the wind. Jules is jealous of Sylvie, until the day Sylvie disappears and everyone assumes she fell into the slip, the treacherous gorge in the Whippoorwill River. What Jules doesn’t know is that when Sylvie died, a Kennen fox was born as her spirit guide. As Jules faces life after Sylvie, she ventures out into the forbidden woods where she bonds with the fox, who guides her to the location of a mystical grotto and reveals the headband Sylvie wore the day she died, helping Jules find closure. Although etched with sadness, the novel artfully blends the worlds of animals and humans through the alternating voices of the fox and Jule. It is bound to leave readers full of hope. This title will appeal to tweens who have experienced a loss, as well as teachers and librarians familiar with the work of this award-winning author team.

Sisters eleven-year-oldJules and twelve-year-old Sylvie are very close but very different. While Jules loves her rock collection,Sylvie's "burning wish" is to run faster. Their mother died when theywere very young, and the family still feels her absence. Their close-knit ruralVermont community is supportive and they see reflections of their own grief ina neighbor who has returned from serving in Afghanistan without his bestfriend. Then, Sylvie disappears, leavingJules and their dad to pick up the pieces. At the same time, a fox named Sennais born. Senna's story is interwoven with Jules's and they connect in asatisfying, though sad, conclusion.

This story has a lot of moving parts and would not work inthe hands of lesser authors; however, Appelt and McGhee weave a magicallylyrical tale marked by sparse, simple prose. Jules and Sylvie's best friend,Sam, could use a bigger part in the story. His obsession with finding acatamount is the seed out of which a companion novel could grow. This is aquiet novel with a quiet cover. Giventhe authors and the quality of the writing, it seems likely that there will berenewed attention when awards season comes around. Not all young readers willbe drawn to it, but for fans of Katherine Patterson's Bridge to Terabithia (Thomas Crowell,1977), this will be anappealing and magical read.—Kristin Anderson. A very special, spirtiual, and beatiful story.
By Charles Chen
I have been struggling to write a review for this book for quite a while as I sort out my reading of it to my 5 year old daughter. It's such a fantastic book that I don't want to do it an injustice.

What is at the core of the story? Is it the relationship between the two sisters? Is it the spiritual connection between the fox and the world into which it is born? Is it the connected-ness of the world in which our protagonists inhabit? Is it about love between sisters and between friends? Maybe it's all of it. In that way, it is reminiscent of Babel (the 2006 film).

I was hesitant at first to read this to my daughter based on the fact that she, too, has a sister and I wondered if maybe the central element of the story would be too difficult for her at this age, but she handled it just fine. As we started the book, I had my doubts as the story unravels quite slowly; I found the pacing of the first part of the story to be quite underwhelming. However, by the second part of the book, once we are introduced to Senna -- a newborn fox -- the story takes off and grabs you by the heart and doesn't let you go. The pacing of the second and third acts is brilliant and gripping. Night after night my daughter would ask for another chapter after we'd used up our allotted reading time and it was time for her to put her head down to sleep.

There is a beauty in the prose that at times is poetic. It's a feeling in the pacing of the words that expresses itself even more so when read aloud. In the first act, it seems extraneous, but by the second and third act, it is beautifully fitting. I think that it may be that by the second and third act, the story hits a very spiritual nature (for anyone concerned, it is certainly not religious -- just spiritual) and it is this aspect that drives the story and the prose. With each chapter and each page, it draws you into the story until the final, momentous crescendo that neatly wraps the story and delivers on the anticipation and promise of the pages before it.

Who is this book for? Adolescents? Sisters? Kids? Parents? It's for all of those; it's for everyone. It is a fantastic book that is rich in emotion, spirituality, and, yes, action. It's one of my favorite reads with my daughter this year and I recommend it for readers of all ages!

Exceptional!
By Jennifer Druffel
MAYBE A FOX by authors Kathi Appelt and Alison McGhee is a heart-wrenching story. After older sister Sylvie is involved in a terrible accident at a place called The Slip, Jules, and her father are left to deal with the loss. As Sylvie leaves the earth, three kits are growing in the belly of a mother fox. One of her kits has a special connection called "Kennen." Events unfold and intertwine beautifully leading from grief to healing. The language is poetic and the symbolism is exceptional. MAYBE A FOX will tug at your heart. Have a tissue handy!
