Military bases are one of the safest places in the world. As she treats the victim, she recognizes a connection between this attack and two others on the same base just months before. Emma suspects this is the work of one man. Coincidently, much of the evidence collected has been lost or tampered with. Emma wants to know who is altering the evidence, and why. When she alerts her commanding officer, she is encouraged to ignore the so-called attacks; he advises her to walk away.
But Emma can’t ignore these attacks; they bring up emotional trauma and a deep-seated fear from her past. A past she has tried hard to ignore and put behind her.
With no one else to turn to, she enlists the help of undercover reporter Greg Sanderman to help solve the crimes. Sanderman, having an unsavory reputation for his unorthodox methods of getting to the truth dives recklessly into the investigation, causing more disdain from the military. As the two work together, a fire ignites between them, sending them further into peril.
Emma is determined to stand up for the rights of the women in the military while dealing with the ghosts of her past. She comes face to face with a self-righteous commander who is more interested in protecting his career and a dark past, a past that is so scandalous it will rock the United States Navy to its core.

Bonnie Sandera's Darkness of Night is a white-knuckler! Emma, the heroine, nearly loses her life in her persistence to find the naval base's serial rapist. Through twists and turns this intuitive Navy psychologist weaves together bits and scraps of personalities' histories and profiles, uncovering deep family secrets that shaped the values and behaviors of her colleagues in today's settings.

Darkness of Night blends the tale of the budding romance between Emma and Greg, a former Navy sniper, as they overcome mysterious and dangerous obstacles in solving these crimes, coming face-to-face with salaried personnel who execute their power and position most unscrupulously!

I'd like to see this in movie format, or as part of Sandera's other works, in a series for TV. Then I could watch unfolding episodes by the week! This is great material for screen, either movie or TV. If it could be shared with the public in those media, the author's intent to expose the serious and often covered-up crimes in our military arenas will be accomplished.

For now, though, this is a very important book to read for the purpose of awareness, to drag the darkness out into the light and to bring justice to the frequently-protected perpetrators. Thanks to the efforts of this author, women's advocacy groups are being formed within the establishment to prevent future crimes against women.

This book serves several purposes; you can cuddle up with it and enjoy the adventures and dramas while becoming an advocate for justice within the military setting! Emma's character deserves a sequel to this novel.

I enjoyed this book based on true military facts, but was still fiction.

A women's life can still be precarious based on the

male superior's mindset. At moments I was angry and at moments I felt uplifted

by those that were working so hard to change things. A good read.

She guides the reader's through different strategies to overcome public speaking anxiety beginning with the importance of preparation.
Ms. Ryan does a great job addressing the stress and anxiety that people experience when they have to speak in front of a group of people. When you're scared, you often try to compensate for your lack of confidence by talking too fast or, heaven forbid, memorizing your speech. Lisa Ryan not only shares the reasons why these practices are detrimental to a speech, she lets you "see" your presentation through the eyes of the audience.
This book contains a wealth of suggestions that any speaker can begin to implement immediately. As a small business coach, I have many clients that don't like to make presentations. I think this book will help them. I have read a lot of these types of book on speaking and found a unique perspective here. I like this book very much and I definitely recommend it!

: A bit basic for the experienced speaker, but a must read for someone getting started

I bought this book because I know Lisa Ryan and I really enjoyed her last book, The Upside of Down Times: Discovering the Power of Gratitude." When I saw her speak last time at a regional marketing event, she shared the story of how she got started in speaking, and it brought back memories of the first several programs that I presented. I'm happy to report that even though I knew a lot of the information contained in the book, there were some great reminders of practices that I had gotten away from and there were a few real gems.

THE GOOD
Lisa Ryan's tone is very conversational and easy to read. She writes like she speaks, sharing lots of knowledge and infusing humor throughout. When it comes to speaking, she's "been there done that" and I enjoyed learning what's working for her.
She addresses ten of the top techniques to develop confidence while speaking. By getting feedback from a lot of other speakers, the tips are not just hers, but are from a variety of experts. I learned some great techniques for pausing to slow down and breathing to calm my nerves, for example.
Each chapter is infused with stories. Some of them show what you SHOULD do as a speaker, and others what you absolutely don't want to do. Learning from the experience of others is always helpful.
Surprisingly, there is a section on professional dress. I thought it was an odd choice for a top ten list, but then I realized how much better I feel in front of an audience when I'm dressed well. She does give more advice to women than to men, but I didn't feel shorted by the effort.

THE BAD
The author doesn't address topics like how to get paid to speak and how to determine what a speaker should charge. Then again, that topic is probably better suited for a more advanced book.
The book is fairly short. Given that she's a professional speaker, I would've liked to hear even more personal stories. Granted, she included a lot of personal stories (I particularly appreciated the story about the dog with gas that visited its owner during one of her presentations), but she's probably got a lot more funny stories where those came from. I wanted more.

Despite these drawbacks, I highly recommend the book. First, it's a common sense, easy-to-follow guide for people who want to speak better. It works for people that are just starting out and want to be more confident when making presentations during the course of their job, and it also gives hope to those that are considering starting to speak professionally. If you're feeling that speaking is an important part of what you do as part of making a living, or you're interested in making a living by speaking, you should buy this book.

A MUST READ if you are thinking about becoming a speaker or are a speaker and want to improve your skills!

Lisa does a masterful job of sharing dozens of useful tools and simple lessons (which can be difficult to learn). Incorporating quotations from many sources, Lisa supports her recommendations with relevant and enjoyable stories and antidotes. The book is very logical in its structure and powerful in its simplicity. Individuals who are thinking about a speaking career will gain a clear understanding of the core skills they will need, and the recommendations regarding Toastmasters and the references in the back of the book are spot-on. More experienced speakers will find a number of delightful "gems" scattered throughout the read.

The Living Myths

Brokaw has a terrific knack for using myths from the past and steering events to make these things believeable in our sceptical scientific society. The plot is excellent and draws the reader in. Lourds finially secumes to love in this novel and is sincere---not acting like a tom-cat! The chase scenes and danger are still present and it is an all-together delightful read.

Good story but slow to develop

Both my wife and I read this book, and came to the same conclusion. It takes far too long for the intrigue to build enough to keep you riveted. I thought the storyline was good, the writing is fine, and the setting was intriguing, but it took almost 75% of the book before we got hooked. That's not to say this is not a good writer or anything of the sort. It's just that he uses a great deal of color to paint his picture.

Awesome, original take on the zombie genre

This was a great zombie thriller, which really turned a lot of the zombie "rules" on their heads – the zombies can shoot guns, drive cars, etc. – have human intelligence – but aren't human at all. Getting bitten by one doesn't make you turn into a zombie, you have to die 1st – and even if you die of an unrelated cause like a heart attack, you will still rise from the dead. Only you wont be you anymore – you will be possessed by a demon who will control your body. All of the zombies are actually intelligent demons were possessing the bodies of the dead. It was a really interesting take on the zombie theme. The book was very compelling and I found myself turning pages eagerly awaiting what each next chapter would bring. The characters were very likable or very easy to hate – I really really cared what happened to them, and the ending – well, I'm really angry at what the author pulled, but in the end, I decided that it really was the best way for it to end. I won't say anything more than that so I don' give a spoiler. But it was really a good book. I just ordered the sequel from paperback swap and I hope it's as good. Oh by the way – animals turned to zombies to in this :-)

So glad I bought this!

I found this gem out at Boarders while I was working the night shift in fast food way out near the farms. Oh! My! I am sooooo glad I found Mr. Keene. I have purchased or borrowed fro the library many of his books. But this series right here!!!! MAAAANN! SO raw!!! Oh my. Get this and City of the Dead. If your debating just do yourself a favor. Any of his books really.

I received a copy of A Stitch In Time by Amanda James in exchange for a review.

When I first received a review request for this book, I wasn't exactly sure what to expect. But, as I got reading, I was very impressed. In a quick and easy ready, this modern-day romance follows Sarah, a middle aged divorcee who happens to be a teacher. Struggling to find her niche at work and feel satisfied, and also struggling to get over the divorce from her ex-husband, she is in dire need of something new and exciting. And she definitely gets that, and more when John Needler shows up into her world. He is larger than life and very attractive but things aren't quite right with him. He confesses that he's involved with time travel and tells Sarah that she has been chosen to help go back in time to fix some things. Her background as a history teacher comes in handy as she is whizzed from time to time in history. But, things get complicated as she starts to feel things for John but doesn't really trust herself to fall in love again. This story is filled with a lot of historical detail and that is something that I really enjoyed. In the end, you see that Sarah is happy that she is a history teacher because it finally came in handy and the author keeps you guessing until the very end as to what will happen between Sarah and John. Will they? Won't they? You have to read to find out.

Timing is everything

I read this book due to a link on Twitter - and I'm so glad I did. I really enjoyed it - and finished it within a couple of days. I love history so the 'travelling back in time' aspect of the book appealed to me - and the characters of Sarah and John were immediately likeable. Sarah was not suddenly all knowing in the situations into which she was flung - and her struggles to decide what she should or shouldn't do in these circumstances were funny and even gripping. It won't matter if you don't usually like fantasy or time travel - the people are the heart of this book. It's an easy read - and thoroughly enjoyable.

How to tell this quickly, well a cute guy shows up and tells her she must stitch together times and sends her back to do so. If she saves 3 she saves 9 and more.

I am taking a step back. Our heroine Sarah is unhappy, she is a teacher but has issues at work. Her personal life sucks too. And if I was her I would be unhappy too. But in comes mystery guy from the time agency. And because she is a history teacher she does well. She gets to to go to WWII Sheffield, to play little house on the prairie and to be a maid. But yes her modern sensibilities both saves her and gets her in trouble. But then it was not easy back then, and certainly not for a modern woman.

Oh yes, I did not forget mystery guy, there are sparks there and I will say no more.

Time-travel, romance and lives to be saved in this interesting mix.
